Dwarves

Description:

Dwarves are a short, stocky race; both male and female Dwarves stand around four feet tall and typically weigh around 150 pounds. Their long hair and thick beards are dark brown, gray or black. They take great pride in their beards, sometimes braiding or forking them. They have a fair to ruddy complexion. Dwarves have stout frames and a strong, muscular build. They are rugged and resilient, with the capacity to endure great hardships. Dwarves are typically practical, stubborn and courageous. They can also be introspective, suspicious and possessive. Dwarves are fond of good food and drink. They value craftsmanship and love gold. Dwarves are sturdy fighters and are resistant to magic. They have a lifespan of three to four centuries. Dwarven families are organized in Clans.

Morals and Ethics:

Dwarves have a strong sense of honor, duty, and tradition. They are often deeply connected to their ancestral homes and to the craftsmanship and engineering that they excel at. Dwarves view themselves as protectors and preservers of their world, with a deep respect for the earth and the minerals and metals that lie beneath it.   Dwarves are more pragmatic and less concerned with abstract concepts such as beauty or spirituality. They are often straightforward and blunt, with a no-nonsense approach to life. At the same time, however, dwarves also have a deep sense of loyalty to their kin and their communities, and are willing to go to great lengths to protect and defend them.   In terms of ethics and morals, dwarves prioritize concepts such as loyalty, honor, and duty above personal gain or individual freedom. They view themselves as part of a larger community or family, with responsibilities and obligations to those around them. At the same time, however, dwarves also have a deep respect for the rule of law and for the social order, and value justice and fairness as important guiding principles.

Views on Race:

  • Halflings: Dwarves view halflings with a mixture of admiration and amusement. Dwarves appreciate the halfling's resourcefulness and love of good food and drink and their ability to find joy in the simple things in life. At the same time, dwarves may also view halflings as somewhat frivolous or unreliable, and may not always take them seriously.
  • Humans: Dwarves view humans with a mix of admiration and wariness. Humans are seen as highly adaptable and ambitious race, with a great capacity for innovation and progress. Dwarves appreciate human creativity and ingenuity, and even seek out human technologies and innovations to incorporate into their own work. At the same time, however, dwarves also view humans as somewhat reckless or impulsive, and may worry that their constant drive for progress and expansion could lead to destructive consequences.
  • Elves: Dwarves view elves with a mixture of respect and distrust. Dwarves and elves often have different priorities and values. Dwarves tend to be focused on practical concerns such as mining and metallurgy, while elves often prioritize spiritual and aesthetic pursuits. Dwarves view elves as somewhat aloof or impractical, and may not always understand or appreciate their way of life. These tensions can make it difficult for dwarves and elves to form strong alliances or friendships.
  • Half-Orcs:

Race Restrictions:

Dwarves are required to have a minimum Constitution of 9. Due to their generally dour dispositions, they may not have a Charisma higher than 17. They may not employ Large weapons more than four feet in length (specifically, two-handed swords, polearms, and longbows). These characters are prohibited from using large weapons, mainly due to their small stature and relatively low weight. It's hard to swing a weapon when the weapon is trying to swing you. If such a character tries to use a prohibited weapon, the Game Master may either apply a -5 attack penalty based on the difficulty of using the weapon, or alternately declare the attempt unsuccessful, at his or her option.

Class Restrictions:

Dwarves may be a Cleric if their Wisdom is 9+, a Fighter if their Strength is 9+, or a Thief if their Dexterity is 9+.

Special Abilities:

All Dwarves are able to detect slanting passages, traps, shifting walls and new construction on a roll of 1-2 on 1d6; a search must be performed before this roll may be made.

Saving Throws:

Dwarves save at +4 vs. Death Ray or Poison, Magic Wands, Paralysis or Petrify, and Spells, and at +3 vs. Dragon Breath.
