Theme Brainstorming

Throughout June, I will be continuously updating and adapting this section to coincide with the planning of my novel. This makes these homeworks particularly fluid for me. So be sure to check back frequently to see my most recent thoughts and ideas for each theme!

Theme 1: Power

Which are the powerful organisations within your world setting? Who are the powerful individuals? What kinds of power do they wield, and what are their weaknesses and needs?
Throughout my prior novel planning, I have identified multiple characters (and therefore organisations) which would utilise some form of 'power'. This may be through a position of power (such as royalty, military rank, etc.), magical power, or organisational power (either as theological groups, political groups, or educational institutions). A lot of these interact with each other too. For example, which important individual rules over which organisation? And is there a sub-organisation related to the initial one?

Theme 2: Frontier

Where are the frontiers in your world setting? And why would anyone want to go there?! What about metaphorical frontiers, like the “frontier of medicine” or space, the “final frontier”?
The world of Amaris is a frontier in itself when it comes to its initial discovery by Idaline and her younger sister. Growing up in the 'human world,' the revelation of the fae realm's existence and the exploration of her own family's mysterious heritage have opened up entirely new possibilities for her. This covers both physical and metaphysical frontiers. It also gives me a good excuse to actually start work on that map...

Theme 3: Relics

What aspects of the past are revered today in your world setting? Which peoples are remembered? And which are forgotten, and why?
In my novel, there are two 'worlds' - Amaris (the fae realm and main location) and the human world. When considering the idea of relics in this world, I want to not only identify unique things distinct to each world, but also the possibility of a relic or two which may connect them both. In terms of historical people/events, The Clachclan Court could easily be built upon. Not only is this a lost fae court, but it also has important connections to Idaline and her family heritage. See previous theme for more on that!

Theme 4: Communication

How do people and organisations from different backgrounds or cultures communicate with each other? How does communication happen over short and long distances? Who in your setting communicates secretly or carefully, and how?
This is definitely an intriguing theme - and one which could work well with what I just finished studying at university. Despite being a psychology degree, I completed modules in the 'psychology of language' as well as 'reading development [and disability]' which could potentially lend itself very well to this theme if there are more specific conlang prompts. Never done it before though! Another way I may look at this is from a more social perspective (again, yay, psych modules!) and from a historical or mystical angle.

Pledge

by World Anvil
I pledge to participate in the World Anvil Summer Camp 2023 with great enthusiasm and dedication. As a first-time participant, I am thrilled to embark on this journey and use it as a stepping stone for the novel that has been simmering in my mind for the past few years. This challenge will not only fuel my creativity, but also provide an activity during the transport sections of my upcoming gap year, commencing also in July.   My goal is to earn the Diamond Badge by completing all 32 prompts. With Amaris, the fae realm of my novel, as the centrepiece of my world-building efforts, I am committed to crafting a comprehensive and immersive universe. However, I am aware that due to time commitments on my gap year, I may be limited to accomplish as much as I hope.   As I embark on my gap year, I am excited to use the transport sections for brainstorming, note-taking, and drafting articles. These moments will be amazing opportunities to refine my ideas and give shape to the world of Amaris.   Furthermore, I am excited to engage with the community on World Anvil. Seeking feedback, sharing my progress, and embracing the community of fellow participants will be essential to my growth as a world-builder.

Thank you so much! Hoping to complete as much as I can - whilst travelling anyways!   Honestly, I really love the finer details, which can bring places to life! Describing details such as how a table is laid, what the food is like or how customs are in a world are just so interesting to me. May be due to my psych background that likes the interpersonal world building if that makes sense?

Yesss I love seeing the smaller details - they really make worlds feel alive and lived in :D
