The Autonomous Diaspora

The Autonomous Diaspora is a collective of like-minded (or at least similarly-minded) "space-steader" groups that engage in voluntary association with one another. Mostly made up of refugees and outcasts from the sector's more authoritarian entities, the primary goal of the Diaspora is self-sufficiency outside of oppressive frameworks. Their secondary goal is to argue about the exact meaning of their primary goal.

Structure

Individual Diasporan groups are self-governing, and often diverge wildly in structure and ideology beyond a lack of traditional hierarchy. Typically a group will have a decisionmaking council made up of representatives responsible for relaying issues and seeking resolutions, though whether these representatives are elected or volunteered depends on the group. Smaller groups may eschew this entirely, and handle all matters via community consensus.

Assets

Diasporan groups make do with technology considered "obsolete" by most other factions, repairing and reusing as much as possible and manufacturing in situ what they cannot. Ships and structures tend to look older, more weathered, or completely broken down, though their occupants insist otherwise.   The single greatest asset to any Diasporan group is whatever ship they arrived to their present location in, whether it be a massive colony ship or a modest freighter. The difficulty of starting a community on an alien world is lessened significantly when one has a second home in orbit with amenities that will take decades to set up planetside, and in the event of catastrophe the group can simply evacuate and look for a new home. Once a community is permanently established, these ships will often be rebuilt into space stations.

Foreign Relations

Diasporans are often ignored or treated as a tolerable nuisance by other entities, though they can be commonly found doing grunt work on contract - as laborers, mercenaries, or even bounty hunters. Dealing with their communities is often seen as "unnecessarily difficult" and it is rare to find a group in some kind of voluntary long-term arrangement with outsiders.

Mutual Benefit

Originally a Diasporan group, the Guild still favors them - but only just so.

Belligerence

If they don't want to be bullied, they should defend themselves better.

Antipathy

The Armada considers the Diaspora a target of convenience, but relishes their occasional conflicts.

Enemies With Benefits

The Consortium finds Diasporans to be perfectly fine workers, and Diasporans are all too often in no position to refuse.

Antipathy

Both groups find the other ideologically repugnant, but the Federation considers converting the Diaspora to be a "long-term project."
