Overview
The Frostfall is an event that has a significant amount of history and heavily shaped the landscape, politically and physically, of
Skalgræða. The Frostfall itself is one specific event within a greater war whose name has long been lost to history, as did many of the events. Perhaps because the losses were so severe for the
Valnir and the people of
Skalgræða that they prefer to only remember their victory in The Frostfall instead of the overwhelming losses that occured leading up to it.
The conflict itself however, was between three major factions; the
Frostfall Confederacy, the
Valnir, and the
Frost Dwarves of
Isenheim. However, it is important to note that The Frostfall itself is not a specific event within the conflict either, instead it is regarded as the stage of the war when the tides turned against the
Frostfall Confederacy and in favor of the
Valnir and
Frost Dwarves.
History
While the Frostfall is a specific event, it should be noted that while most of the war was lost to history, there are many things that people still very much know and awknowledge. The
Valnir especially had lost many, many clans and tribes throughout the course of the war. If it was not for the involvement of
Isenheim, The Fortress-City the Valnir very likely would have lost.
The war itself and the conflict arose because the
Jotun had spread their power and influence throughout the entirety of
Skalgræða. Such was their dominion and power that not even
Isenheim believed that their defenses could hold up to the military might of the
Jotun. They effectively controlled the entirety of
Skalgræða and could enforce anything on any single tribe or clan they wanted.
The
Valnir and their near infinite warriors lead by the three Shieldmaidens [INSERT THREE NAMES HERE] managed to become expert guerilla warriors, able to strike nearly anywhere in the frozen North as was required. Their tenacity in the face of adversity reall shown through during the Frostfall and the conflict as a whole.
The
Frost Dwarves however contributed a sizable army of warriors and a near unbreakable wall of fighters that the
Valnir were able to use as an anvil to help break some of the
Frostfall Confederacy armies. However, the primary contribution of
Isenheim turned out to be the one group that never made it to the history books, nor is recalled by almost anyone... The Snowtreaders. The Snowtreaders are a group of nameless, faceless trackers and wayfarers who know
Skalgræða better than almost anyone else. Their role as scouts and elite warriors allowed
Valnir and the
Frost Dwarves to execute successful raids and ambushes across the North.
What ultimately led to The Frostfall is when the
Frost Dwarves and
Valnir had gotten word of an encampment where all of the strategists and warleaders of the
Frostfall Confederacy had gathered. The one misstep in years of campaigning, and they took full advantage of it. The combined armies of the north marched upon the encampment and while losses were heavy, they managed to capture at least three of the
Jotun who masterminded the campaign and killed the rest.
The rest of the war is largely left as a footnote to that main event, as with the defeat of their military minds, the
Frostfall Confederacy fell into disarray militarily. Supply trains became unorganized and with the
Valnir and
Dwarves of
Isenheim using the captured strategists and generals to inform their own decisions, the war was still long but it heavily swung within the favor of the Northmen and Fortress-City until the
Frostfall Confederacy was largely defeated and the
Jotun mostly exiled for the far northern reaches of
Skalgræða.
The final years of campaigning during the Frostfall the armies of the North effectively played an elaborate game of cat-and-mouse with the remnants of the
Frostfall Confederacy. The
Valnir spread out across
Skalgræða to hunt down the remnants while the
Frost Dwarves focused on hitting main encampments and fortresses constructed by the
Jotun and brought them crumbling down.
After many years of campaigning and destroying the last remnants of the
Frostfall Confederacy, the
Jotun sat down in what they would only describe as the event that naerly led to their total annhilation. The
Frost Dwarves and the
Valnir both exiled the
Jotun who were part of the
Frostfall Confederacy to the most desolate northern reaches of
Skalgræða where they would be forced to eek out the remainder of their existence, which only later led to them being the first to fall to
Ragnarök.
