Drowning Spite

Origins

The Drowning Spite is said to be created when a sailor is thrown into the ocean or made to walk the plank, and they are so filled with rage, hate, or spite that when they die, their spirit refuses to pass on. Instead, it flows back into their corpse and begins to literally drag others down with it. This is why plank-walking has become significantly less popular, instead, they will often preform a 'castoff' where they drop the individual off on an island or whatever shore they might find before quickly moving.   It is said they do not kill for sustenance, that the only thing that keeps them going in their never-ending hate and desire for revenge against all those who sail along the seas, as they see them as the ultimate reason for their demise. Both the captain they once served under, or perhaps the one who threw them into the ocean, assuming they are different individuals.

Description

The Drowning Spite is depicted as a bloated, bluish-purple corpse with dead-looking eyes and a very slow pace. They tend not to move very fast for in water where their natural control of their buoyancy. Their claws are thick and allow them to grab onto the hulls of passing ships and slowly haul themselves up the hull of the ship until they reach the edge, grabbing at whoever they can with their vicious, dirty claws before releasing their grip on the ship and falling back into the sea with their prey.   Some of these undead creatures are even more bloated than the others and take far longer to scratch and crawl their way up the hull of a ship, but are far more deadly. Their bodies bloated with gases from underwater and making them, in effect, bloated bombers, throwing themselves onto the deck and rending it asunder with the force from the gases expanding and combusting.
