Pilot

"Zippy was the best pilot I ever knew. Flew an aetherform cataphract for Third Squadron. Our carrier group came under fire from Drakonian pirates, the battle was fierce and Zippy's whole squadron was blown out of the sky except for him, so he transformed in space and used one of the Draconian tethers to pull himself back to the mothership and boarded them. We think he sought out and destroyed the reactor, but whatever happened the mothership exploded and all the subordinates stopped. Even after all this time, the Draconians don't trust their subordinates enough to let them have full control, so that was thirty fighters, eleven corvettes, and two destroyers all dead in the water. Zippy even survived... basically. Had most of his body replaced with cybernetics by the end. Drives a cab around Saturn's moons now. Last I checked he still had his license, too... while the appeal goes through"

Steering the Future

'Pilot' is really just the preferred blanket term for anyone driving a big machine, but it does evoke a certain earned image in the Age of Convergence. That image is one of a reckless, confident swagger, a maverick used to going their own way, and a strange dissonance between someone who can calculate f(t+dt)=f(t)+f′(t)dt+12!f”(t)(dt)2 on the back of a napkin while also being the same type of person to fly willingly into a half-built world breaking space station to launch short range torpedos directly at the station's battery and then race the explosion out.

Up and Down

"Pilots" can operate starships, hovercrafts, or cataphracts.. They typically specialize, but it's not unusual to see multi-disciplinary pilots, particularly amongst cataphract jocks.

All Around

Pilots are the blood cells of the Pan-Solar Consortium. They fly the mass freight haulers that bring goods and people from one world to another, they fly the starfighters and cataphracts that meet the enemy one on one and the corvettes, destroyers, carriers and dreadnoughts that make up the full might of the fleets. They fly hovercraft as cab drivers, gravtank crew, and even fleets of gravbikers.
