Brain in a Jar

"Grgh. Giggle tangent. Red parallel has vibrated gritty-gritty wandurber. Nicto."
— Thomas Gadfie, CEO of Nexus Cybernetics, after his secretary plugged in his BiJ Implant backwards.

A Miracle of Modern Medicine

The Brain in a Jar implant, officially known as the Brain Isolation Pod, is essentially a cybernetic replacement for the blood-brain barrier. Instead of a system of membranes and increasingly permeable tissues, the same feat is accomplished by a series of pumps and filters, scrubbing the blood and efficiently packaging oxygen and managing hormone levels.

An Insurance Cybernetic

The original BiJIs were basically just insurance against sudden death. If the body is destroyed, the brain can survive for up to eight hours. The implant automatically shuts the brain down in such an event, preventing the horror of being a brain in a jar from really dawning on an isolated brain... so long as the shut down function is operational and undamaged.

Plug and Play

Rapidly, cybernetics enthusiasts figured out that a modified CCM port could be adapted to become an implant between the brain stem and the brain, allowing a BiJI to be removed with the brain intact and returned to the body afterwards. During the time of separation, the body is put into what amounts to a medically induced coma, which then has to be taken care of medically or put into cold storage for long sojourns away from the body.
