Nigdage (/nɪgdɪd̠ʒ/)
The city Nigdage is a large settlement in central Chuvia, in the centre of the Earldom of Mudtarme, where it is the largest city in the Earldom, and the 7th largest in the Kingdom.
One thing to note on the map is that river actually keeps going south instead of bending, and there isn't a second bridge crossing near the city.
Demographics
The population of Nigdage is representative of the rest of the kingdom. The majority of the city is human, with elves making up second majority, followed by halflings, dwarves and gnomes.
Government
The ruler of the city is the Earl of Mudtarme; but since the earl resides in Gloomwood, the mayor, and sheriff, of Nigdage are responsible for the running and justice in the city respectivly.
Anyone who resides within the city walls, or in a two mile radius of the city is expected to pay taxes to the city, which goes towards paying the city guard, the maintance of the public buildings, and the roadways of the city. Taxes are collected on every second Tosulat, except when it falls on a holiday, when it is skipped, and the next tax day is expected to have a double amount.
Defences
The most notable defence in the city is the walls, which have been well maitained as the population has nearly tripled since the 6th century. It is patrolled by a regiment of the guard that is specifically reserved for this duty, known as the "Curtain Guard". The walls themselves are 20 feet (6m) thick at the base, with 5 foot (1.5m) thick parapet along the top facing the outside, leaving room for 3 men to walk abreast along the top. The outside of the walls are 40 feet (12m) to the parapet, making it difficult to scale; though it has been dug out and the inside of the wall is 30 feet (9m) from the top, with ladders about every 300 feet (90m), and stairs up at the towers dotted around the wall.
There are 19 towers on the city wall, with them reaching another 20 feet (6m) up to a total fo 60 feet. The towers but up against the wall, but still allow patrols to go around without having to go inside. Inside they have several floors, each with ample amounts of ammunition for archers, should an attack come (being in the heart of the kingdom, this is very unlikely).
Infrastructure
The largest building in the city is the Temple of Cadis, making it the major landmark that can be seen above the city walls, and with its height it can be seen up to 5 miles away.
Due to the population boom over that last two centuries there has been significant investment into the creation of multistory appartment blocks to accomidate everyone, as well as a school system to help everyone living within a home inside the city walls a chance to learn more than just the basics of reading and writing, with education provided up until the age of 10.
On the east side of the city is the river Kilhell, which is the main watersource, and also has the Nigdage Bridge crossing it. The current bridge is the third to have been built across it, with the first having collapsed shortly after the founding of Chuvia; and the second having been replaced after stones were seen to have been falling in the river below as a merchant caravan travelled across it. The bridge is the main way across to the outer city on its east bank, although there are still smaller ferries that operate, charging a few coppers for the convenience of crossing quickly, as opposed to walking all the way to the bridge, crossing, and then back down the river.
