Penny goat

Penny goat is a dish consumed in the cities of Chogyos and, much less commonly, Elpaloz. Though not a staple or indeed even particularly popular dish, it is of social significance due to being traditionally served at the initiation ceremonies of the Bruised Ones.

Composition

Penny goat is a kebab-like dish made by grilling finely-minced goatflesh around a metal skewer. Of particular interest is the seasoning of the meat, which involves the liberal use of sea salt, mint and, in rather greater quantities, pennyroyal. The result is a rather astringent and bitter dish which has never been popular outside its ritual context. Consumption of a particularly large serving can cause significant short-term liver ailments due to the concentration of pennyroyal.

Cultural significance

Penny goat was traditionally served at banquets to celebrate the investiture of members of the Bruised Ones in Chogyos or (less commonly) Elpaloz. The new member is generally expected to consume a large serving of it at the dinner to mark the end of their probationary period and their induction into full membership. Only occasionally does anybody else eat it.   The dish is therefore of considerable interest to thaumatologists studying the history of the Bruised Ones. For the last three hundred years the organisation has been something of a lady's social club, a network by which women of sufficiently gentle birth may liaise and organise social events. In this capacity it is a pervasive feature of the aristocratic life of Chogyos. Those with an eye to history, however, know that the Bruised Ones originated as a pre-Wesmodian cult of female devotees of the god Krezzan in Chogyos and Elpaloz; historically the other two cities of the Chogyan Hegemony, Ramoros and Loros, also had chapters. Theses were young girls who devoted a period of their adolescence to liturgical observances surrounding Krezzan and received public adulation for doing so.    It would make sense for a group such as the Bruised Ones to make use of pennyroyal in their investiture. The herb is a well-known abortifacient, used historically as a form of contraception in various communities around the Sea of Jars. The pre-Wesmodian Bruised Ones were expected to be celibate for the duration of their time in the sisterhood; while this was hardly onerous (most members joined as children, with records suggesting girls as young as eight were involved) it may well have become a concern as members began reaching marriageable age. Although records sow that Krezzan was primarily a god of time, that sphere of influence also made him a god of death and young women directly involved in his worship were not expected to become pregnant and thus produce new life. Exactly how anybody dealt with contraventions of this rule is not recorded, but the consumption of a contraceptive tonic would probably preempt any need for such measures. Given the unpleasant and (if consumed in high enough concentrations) unhealthy nature of pennyroyal consumption this custom likely changed over time to a once-only precaution at the beginning of a young lady's tenure.    Penny goat therefore provides some insight into the pre-Wesmodian worship of Krezzan. Thaumatologists speculate that pennyroyal, or penny goat as a completed dish, might carry some significance in efforts to reconstruct magical techniques related to time and death. Given the grim nature of that sort of research, however, published scholarship on the matter is thin on the ground.
