Naming Traditions
Family names
Family names are passed from father to son, and from mother to daughter. Orphan Scions don't have a family name but will generally designate by location (if you all live together, you're a family). Equivalents will take on whatever family name goes with the person they're replacing.
Other names
First names are generally on the longer side, and do not change, even through equivocation. Generally speaking, scions will use a shortened version of their name, while cardinates use the longer version. Equivalents make use of the full length name to help create a differentiation between who they were and who they are now expected to be.
Example: Roshiren is a scion, so he uses the name Rosh. Viveka was called Viva as a scion, and when she was evocated, she took the surname of the woman she replaced and became Viveka Elekas. Hannalee is a cardinate and so uses the full version of her first name, combined with her mother's surname, making her Hannalee Waldera.
There are exceptions. For example, Brenna is not a name that lends itself to nicknames, so as an equivalent she uses the same version of her name as when she was a scion. Her evocation being something of a complicated situation where it was not possible for her counterpart's family to be the ones raising her, she nonetheless took the family name of her counterpart.
