Genetic Record

The genetic records are not quite an ID. They are not the easy-to-use chits that most people carry with them that link to job, permissions, academic record, etc. The genetic records are simply that: someone's complete genetic genealogy, going back to the very beginning of the Dome. The only names included are the person being examined, their parents, and their grandparents, to avoid external data coming into analysis as much as possible.

Purpose

The purpose of the genetic record is to track a person's DNA and genetic history to avoid pairing people who are too close, to check for possible deformities, and to ensure that certain traits are successfully passed on to as many people as possible. (In some cases. In others, the intent is to ensure that while a sequence is passed on, that it is not too prominent in the population.)

Document Structure

Publication Status

For most people, the documents are openly available as they are. It is odd to look at someone else's genetic record, and typically unnecessary for those outside of the scientific or matchmaking professions, but it is not illegal or even frowned upon. Just weird.   Unless, of course, you are an Orphan (or have been previously), in which case you should probably be nowhere near the genetic databases anyway, and if you are at some point able to look at your record, the identity of all related to you will be removed to maintain the anonymity required by the process.

Historical Details

Background

The need for the genetic record came from the original population of the Dome being fairly small. The originators wanted to ensure that inbreeding would be avoided, but also ensure that certain traits necessary to the function of the ship would be passed forward. They set up a database to record all the necessary data, and tied it to an analysis program that would them make appropriate marital pairings based on the genes needed for each generation.

Public Reaction

The genetic record is unquestioned at present. You have no choice whether or not you have one, because a profile is completed before someone is even an hour old.   Initially, there was some doubt about whether or not certain people were manipulating the situation to make it so that they had more descendants than others. This led to the anonymization of the data. It was even a question as to leaving in the names of parents, but it was decided that to avoid certain awkward situations in cases of Orphans, the data should remain (if expressly hidden in most cases).
