Az Gauhnith Grimst Settlement in Teutspedia | World Anvil

Az Gauhnith Grimst

The same Dwarven engineers that had drained The Plains of Horstmar discovered sizeable mineral deposits beneath the marsh and were able to create an accurate geological map of the area. Based on the wealth of resources they found and the goodwill towards them for making the Plains, they persuaded wealthy nobility in the area to invest in the construction of a settlement on the shore of the Mithrim Mérna.

Originally Az Gauhnith Grimst was designed to be a small, temporary mining settlement for a couple of hundred dwarves to excavate the surrounding tunnels. However, as tunnels were dug during construction, they discovered vast deposits of rare materials such as gold and diamonds. Missives were sent to every powerful Dwarf clan across Teutonia requesting workers. They arrived in the hundreds from every corner of the nation, eager at the chance to mine freely to their heart's content and construct a city with Dwarves from other clans.

Over the next 100 years, construction was carried out on a grand city, large enough to house 5-6 thousand Dwarves, by representatives from almost every Dwarf clan in Teutonia. The Sartos Rak Otho (lit. Family of Faith) saw it as a Great Work. This council represented dwarven interests above ground and was responsible for the race’s laws, customs and religious observances at the time as such clansfolk were encouraged to travel here on an astim estvers (lit. sight summons), a quasi-religious pilgrimage undertaken by crafters and apprentices to places of importance to Dwarfkind.

Now, Az Gauhnith Grimst is home to the largest concentration of Dwarves across all of Teutonia and, while technically still a part of Munster, is a thriving city in its own right. Individual clan allegiances are much less prevalent here than in other Dwarf settlements due to the nature of its collaborative construction.

It is ruled by an independent council, elected from among the combined Dwarven population, with an additional seat set aside for a surface representative of Munster to take part in meetings as the two cities have a vested interest in the success of each other.
