Lianas Entanglement

South of Idrik lies a labyrinth of vines whose history and natural features keep the people away. It is said to be a nearly impassable stretch of jungle, so the denizens of Idrik keep to the northern part of the peninsula, and have little reason to head south anyways. The entanglement of lianas vines was not always present though. When the jungle was still young, trees and undergrowth flourished here like anywhere else on the peninsula, but modern superstition holds that one of the great old serpents was killed here, and the creeping vines that snuff out other flora are said to be the bones of this once great snake, attempting to escape the underworld by reaching towards the sun and heavens.

Geography

North of the Brine Firth, before the Laeland peninsula splits, sits a massive, sprawling entanglement of vines and roots. The lianas vines have taken over the jungle growth here, taking precious nutrients from the other trees and ground plants that once tried to grow here. The lianas spread across the entire breadth of the peninsula, as they reach up towards the sun. Though the entanglement has less dense other undergrowth than the rest of the Laelands, the lianas vines themselves make traversing this region slow work.

Ecosystem

As part of the Laeland peninsula, the Lianas Entanglement is subject to monsoon season as well. During the dry season the vines and roots themselves make traversing this area difficult enough, but during the wet season it becomes even more treacherous. The vines still make travel difficult, but are then paired with mud and sinkholes that swallow up those that pass through, almost as if the great snake believed to be buried below is swallowing them up.

Fauna & Flora

The lianas vines absorb most nutrients that other plants rely on, and climb up these other trees and plants reaching towards the sun. As such, food is scarcer here, so the population of fauna is not quite as large as elsewhere on the peninsula. A troop of monkeys has made the entanglement their home, as the vines make travel quick and easy, while also providing some protection from predators. It is believed that more sinister creatures call this place home as well, particularly large serpents, but there are also rumors of powerful mystic serpents (Nagas).
