Karoth, The Sixth Layer
Many entrance ways lead to the sixth layer, but once one enters Karoth, few can ever leave. Such is the way of Mammon, lord of the Sixh layer of Karoth. Once one enters, his greedy tendrils never let go of those poor souls that end up here. None can leave, for none can refuse the pull to take more and more. People must have more, even if it costs them their lives and dignity. Such is the winding forever mazes and mineshafts of Karoth, as souls are left wandering aimlessly or forced to work and dig for gold that rots in their hands. The only gold that lives is when it is thrown into the bottomless pit of greed that Mammon sits atop, constantly screeching for more and more.
The souls here are driven mad by having nothing and gaining nothing, and they fight one another for even the barest scrap of fecal matter or gem. Traps lie everywhere, as Mammon is perhaps the most paranoid of the devil lords, for he knows all his tormented souls and even his infernal subjects desire and crave his horde. With greed that would put a dragon to shame, he hides his horde as best he can, for the large gold pit is but barely a fraction of his true horde. He is always on the look out for spies, and for this reason he has made Karoth as difficult and inhospitable to navigate as he possibly can. While in theory this realm could result in adventuerers having enough gold for eternity, they never make it out alive or sane of this realm. The realm and the lord itself work to shift and change to make escape as difficult as possible. The only reliable way out is to fight and kill Mammon, but that is so much easier said than done.
