Goblins Species in Tertara | World Anvil

Goblins

Basic Information

Anatomy

Goblins possess a humanoid form

Biological Traits

Curiously, Goblins have a incredibly distant fey like ancestry, being noticeably in just how other worldly they are. They are small and agile, quick on their feet and able to move in to fight off predators or prey. What they make up for in lack of strength is in sheer cunning and numbers. They prefer to swarm their prey and overwhelm with surprise and sheer numbers rather then a more traditional engagement.

Genetics and Reproduction

Goblin gestation period lasts about 5 months, and most females regularly have 5-10 kids each pregnancy

Growth Rate & Stages

Goblins reach adulthood by around 8 years old

Dietary Needs and Habits

Largely omnivores, however they do have a tendency to favor meat over other forms of sustenance. There are some rather horrifying stories of them eating victims in raids and ambushes, few live to confirm if this is what actually happens.

Goblin technology is typically crude, kitbashed, or stolen, though this does not mean they are incapable of making their own materials. Its simply just easier and more "fun" to steal and copy what they steal.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Goblin is the main language goblins speak. Goblin language is guttural and rough sounding, known for being quick and to the point.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Typical goblin culture outside of city communities is brutal, cutthroat, and violent. They are notoriously cruel, and vicious to each other and others. They are driven by a need to fight and eat, and typically organize into tribes or heavily fortified fortresses around the most vicious and cutthroat of them. These goblin kings reign are short lived and violent, but some manage to make their names written in blood across history. Some have said that their fey nature perhaps explains their behavior, but more then likely, this is merely just what they have survived by doing. They enslave those they capture in raids to do menial tasks and other such things. They are also excellent at using worgs, known to them as "murder wolves", for battle mounts or pack hunters. They derive almost some twisted enjoyment from the suffering of others, much like a cat plays with the mouse. However, the long established existence of goblins in cities that live perfectly average, if not peaceful, lives completely shatters the ludicrous idea that some scholars say this behavior is inherit in the goblins. In truth, they are a people capable of kindness, and some of the most savage cruelty one can imagine, like Orcs in some ways.

History

No one is entirely sure where they came from, but they have always been there. In grim fairy tales told to children and told to brave people to warn them of the dangers outside villages. However these villages rarely are any safer as Goblins have been known to reduce into villages to ash, rubble, and blood. Their resemblance to Orcs only further confuses scholars as to their origins. The best theory is that they are of the Wyld Realm. Not among the dangerous but beautiful grasslands, but of the deep, dark, and twisted forests and caves. Some say they were the result of a failed experiment by cruel and demonic gods. Some say they come from the moon, but in truth there isn't much information to go on.   What is known for sure is that even the earliest written records among the "civilized" communities make mentions of goblins raiding and pillaging the lands. This is because of this almost horrifying hatred of the world the goblins now live in, the mortal realm we all inhabit. They are cruel to themselves and everyone else, but of course, it has to be said that some goblins manage to live more peaceful, traditional lives away from their brethren. Whatever the case, they breed quickly, and are almost if not more of a frequent threat than Orcs, which is shocking to say the least. Its only gotten worse as the world has seemed to plunge further and further into chaos, and the roads have almost become overrun with them. Their size makes many underestimate them as puny and weak, easy to deal with. While they are indeed weak, the sheer size of their numbers drowns out the screams of those who underestimated them, only to find a dozen blades hack away at their limbs in cruel laughter.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Due to the rather bad reputation throughout most history, goblins are mistrusted and viewed with suspicion by others. Many have suffered through goblin raids and scars don't heal quickly. For those goblins trying to simply live peaceful lives, this means a life enduring prejudice and bigotry, but this doesn't stop those brave souls for the most part.
