The Elemental War

Montaigne and Avalon declare war on Ruskovich, launching the so-called “Elemental War”, which largely surrounds Ruskovich’s continued attempts to undermine and eliminate Elemental technology for a more traditional lifestyle. In a blatant attempt to set Montaigne and Avalon back, Ruskovich sabotages several important new inventions   In the summer of 1854, Avalon had made several advances in new types of elemental containment technology, allowing for more metals and more variety in eletech inventions. Montaigne was quick to capitalize off of these finds, immediately applying them to airship and locomotive use. Seeing this as a threat to their country and values as new means of travel would mean new attempts at penetrating the iron curtain for invasion, Ruskovich sent several teams of mercenaries and spies to disable and steal those new inventions. These incidents became violent with the deaths of several Avalonian and Montaignian armed units as well as civilian casualties when a steam ship carrying one invention was sunk, costing the lives of all onboard.   Avalon and Montaigne promptly declared war on Ruskovich, joined swiftly thereafter by Eisen, Patlov, and Vodacce. Vesten maintained neutrality as it often does in many wars and conflicts, serving only as needed medical aid for both sides during skirmishes.   Over the next two years, the elemental wars raged in various battles across Europa, often along the borders of Eisen, Patlov, and Ruskovich, but also in fields in Avalon and Montaigne. While military casualties were hardly light, civilian casualties were the worst, particularly outside of Ruskovich, when factories, research laboratories, and experiments were sabotaged in vicious ways. While some of the battles did occur on Ruskovich soil, many did not - there was little access through the Iron Curtain and, importantly, many Europans felt that destroying peasant farmers along the border would be of no tactical aid. The result was a particularly strong distaste of Ruskovich and their tactics through most of Europa.   After two years of fighting, peace was finally brokered by, of all things, the Illuminated Watch. The order of high level wizards had seen too much fall to the greed of their own kind in the past and arranged for diplomatic meetings to cease hostilities. The result ended in several trade agreements that strictly limited the flow of eletech into the Ruskovian empire.
