Nicodemus, God of Death & Afterlife (nick-oh-DEEM-us)

The Prince of Twilight, The Black Traveler, The Unheard Prophet

Portfolio

Nicodemus is the god of death, secrecy, manners, and the afterlife   Nicodemus strives for balance in most of his dealings. He sees the value of the law and the value of breaking it when it is unjust. He knows that dark deeds may be done in the service of the greater good, and that the best of intentions can still lead to doom.

Depiction

Nicodemus is depicted as a dark-haired, grim-faced human or orcish man, often with a short beard, dressed all in black. He is typically shown with either a scythe or, strangely, a guitar.   Nicodemus is a quiet, moody god with a somewhat dry, dour sort of outlook. He is responsible for sorting departed souls into their proper location after death, sending the dead to the right deity’s afterlife, and he views this as a job of utmost importance. The god also has a rather dry, sarcastic sense of humor, and a fondness for mortal musicians and taverns; it's said that he can occasionally be found in a quiet bar, having an ale and playing music.

Relationships

Nicodemus is the son of Morwen and Kelesta, the twin brother of Peitho, husband to Sephira, and father to Kallias   Nicodemus deals mostly with his wife and son, although other deities do try to draw the dour god into being more social, especially Peitho. Nicodemus and Akmon despise each other due to Akmon’s continued pursuit of Sephira, although Nicodemus’s greatest ire is reserved for his father, Morwen. He loves his family deeply, even though he is often bad at showing it.

Symbols

Nicodemus’s holy symbol is a black scythe on a silver background   Nicodemus’s colors are black and gray   Nicodemus’s favored weapon is the scythe   Among Nicodemus’s other symbols are ravens, bones, hourglasses, and apples
