Pater Tyelca

Pater Tyelca (also used as Pater Maedhros), is the title given to Maedhros within the Cult of Maedhros. It is a shortened form of Paternus Tyelca, or 'Father of the Swift'. Its date of origin is murky, just as is the origin of the Cult, however it's use is one of the few well known pieces of the Cult's practices that are known beyond the edges of the Darkwood.

History

The title of Pater Tyelca is derived from the original Taurétyelcan religion. During the peak of Taurétyelca, Tyelcans began referring to Maedhros as 'father', referencing his place as the person who discovered the Parma Tyelca, and with it, founded - or fathered - their sect of Taurévarna. Though Maedhros publicly rejected this title, it was still commonly used amongst the followers of the faith, typically utilizing the longer form 'Father Tyelca' so as not to directly tie Maedhros' name to the title.

Though the date is unknown, the term Father was replaced with 'Paternus', or 'Pater' for short, at some point in the first Era as the Cult of Maedhros took full root in the Darkwood as it replaced Taurétyelca. It is believe that Maedhros official title within the cult today remains 'Paternus Tyleca', though cultists are often heard using 'Pater Maedhros' in the rare occasions they interact with the outside world.

Cultural Significance

The Pater Tyelca is the central figure of the Cult of Maedhros, and with it, the greater culture of the Darkwood. It is understood that the Pater's teachings during his lifetime continue reign over the decision-making process within the Darkwood, and all organized activity is intended to meet what his desires were for the Tyelcans before the Martyrdom. Despite the exact structure of the cult being shrouded in mystery, the Paternus Tyelca remains at the top of the hierarchical structure more than 4,890 years after his martyrdom.
