emissaries

A young man from a community or congregation who will turn 14 years old up to one year before the end of a 77-year term is eligible to be anointed as an emissary   The ritual can be performed by three bishops or a cardinal.   This might happen differently at every place that has a plinth of Aya   In some places, a young man might volunteer to go on this sometimes arduous pilgrimage, while in others, he may be submitted by his family or elected through some sort of process. Stealing a Divine Compass is also a possibility as soon as it has been summoned to a plinth. In some instances, this might happen in secrecy. A plinth will bear 7 Compasses and might bear another 7, 77 days later.     When the three bishops or a cardinal summon a Divine Compass at the given time, the earlier it appears, the further away a plinth is from the spire. It will then appear on the surface of the plinth. If someone holds it against their skin, it will extend probes through the skin to determine the age and gender, among other things, before grafting itself deeper into the skin and extending filaments to anchor itself to a bone, much like a seashell attaches to a ship. Initially, there is a numbing feeling, and there might be some discomfort when moving. With time, the compass will move itself to a convenient position and rearrange the muscles to not hamper the carrier. It will update the immune system and render an emissary infertile.   The emissary will become aware of the temple spire and its location and have an urge to get there. Bibles will prepare the means to get there, and clerics will build ships and run sea routes. Followers of the Church of Aya will help emissaries on the pilgrimage. But emissaries might also find ways to help themselves and usually gather to travel small groups.
