Shipwrights Guild

Overview

The Shipwrights Guild is one of the oldest guilds in Atlantis. It was started in year 15CY. It is linked to the early voyages to and from Atlantis and Poseidon himself. All Shipwrights in the guild must swear an oath to Poseidon and receive a small silver ship's anchor to be placed somewhere on their person as a sign of their membership.

Guild Emblems Worn

The small silver anchor represents a fully completed ship. It has some use when seeking to gain passage on vessels - the showing of the symbol will gain a 25% price reduction in all passage costs - this does not extend to shipping of merchandise unless the character is going on board the ship as well - then it gives a 10% reduction in cartage prices.

Poseidon Influences

The shipwrights guild is strongly under Poseidon's influence and the blessing of all ships is done by Priests of his temple. No ship is launched in Atlantis City without such a blessing.

The Shipwright paying a Priest of Poseidon for this service will often receiver a discount of their services as a sign of fealty to the Priesthood.

An established shipwright will also hire out their work area for others with the Shipwright membership (and Boatwright Prof.), and can also sell Shipwright tools should the Character needs it.

Guild Influences

The Guild has had a huge influence on the Atlantean system of skill development. It was, like the blacksmith guild, one of the original first Guilds of the World

Proficiencies Learned

From this guild you can learn Boatwrighting, Navigation, Canoemaking, and Rope Mastery as an associated skill.

Equipment Sold

Traditionally, the shipwright has a large range of sophisticated woodwork tools. As well as the heavy adze, broad axe, wooden mallets and wedges, the craftsman has steel tools such as anvils, files, snips, awls, augers, gouges, draw knife, knives, including folding knives, chisels and small 300 mm (12 inches) long bow saws with antler handles. Edged tools are kept sharp with sharpening stones from the Centre Reach. One of the most sophisticated tools was a 25 mm (0.98 inches) diameter twist drill bit, perfect for drilling holes for treenails. Simple mechanical pole wood lathes are also available. A Full Shipwright kit is 50gp in cost and weighs 100lbs in weight. (Source:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longship)

NOTE: A shipwright can open a door that fails to open on the first open doors attempt - it allows a re-roll - the idea being that the wedges, awls, and chisels allow for the door to be ' refitted' enough after having been hit so hard - for another attempt.

Structure

A standard guild structure of Masters, Apprentices and Journeymen.

Culture

A busy guild with no time for politics - it is constantly busy building and refitting the vessels active in Atlantis.

Assets

The Shipwrights have extensive shipbuilding docks, dry docks and launch bays for their vessels as well as workshops and hidden shipyards for the making of more advanced vessels.

XV - this is a reference to the year of its founding but also to the diagonal braces used in some boats.
