Queen Basiliea

The Queen Euryphaessa Ourania (a.k.a. Basilea, Theia)

Basilea

aka Theia (Θεία)

Goddess of Valued Sights and Brilliance, with gold the goddess from which all light proceeded. She was known as Theia - the Divine One - as through her power, even the ordinary can appear to be divine - giving it a valued and even adored glow.

Basilea was the first queen of the legendary Kingdom of Atlantis in ancient Greek folk tradition. She is also known as the mild-eyed Euryphaessa (Εὐρυφάεσσα), "the far-shining one".

In truth, she is the Titan Goddess of Sight and Light but only in so far as it is Valued Light and Reflections. It is she who gives value to inanimate substances. This is the quality of all non-living substances not only to reflect light, but to do so in a manner that is beautiful. Through her influence, the substances of Gold, Silver, and Orichalcum reflect light in a way that causes them to be valued by sentient beings. It is her power that allows crystals, gems and even glass to radiate light in a manner that makes them (and it) beautiful. She is therefore considered in part to be the Goddess of Wealth, and Value. In the end, anything that shines and is valued is linked to her.

Basilea is also the mother of Selene and Helios, the charioteers of the Sun and Moon. Each radiate or reflect light, effectively giving value to all things.

Basilea was the eldest daughter of Ouranus. Basilea is the eldest of forty-five children. Basilea became known as the “Great Mother” because of her maternal treatment of her younger siblings.

She achieved the throne of Atlantis through popular vote as well as through bloodline. She married her brother Hyperion and was the mother of Selene, the Chariotess of the Moon, and Helios, the Charioteer of the Sun. These children were slain by her brothers to prevent them achieving control of the crown,

With this Basilea went insane with grief, and "wandered up and down, with hair disheveled and bedizened with ornaments, playing wildly on the timbrel and cymbal.”

When the people of Atlantis tried to restrain her, she disappeared into a terrible lightning storm. In honor of Basilea and her children, divine rites were established. Basilea is said to still seek to resurrect her children with the aid of the Olympians should it be permitted.

These are continued today even after Poseidon gained control of the Continent through luck and providence. Zeus may be the God of Success and all Celestial Light, but the impact of these radiances on objects that cause them to give off reflections in a beautiful way are said to belong to Basiliea.

Mental Trauma

The horrifying deaths of her baby boy (infanticide), Helios, and subsequent death of her daughter Selene through suicide, all at the hands of her own brothers, who had killed the child (nepoticide) knowing that the older sister would be pushed to suicide, traumatized Theia to the point of insanity. Her only thread of sanity lies in the knowledge that her children are honored as the Sun and Moon to this very day.
