Eye of the Moon Oracle Types

Overview

The Eye of the Moon is the main area where several atmospheric and some animal based Oracles are practiced. The Priestesses and Oracles at this site specialise in their interpretation. If a character learns one of these methods then it will normally be from here. The Oracle of the Eye of the Moon - practices Chaomancy primarily. However, there are several prophetic methods that are done as a sub-set of the Chaomancy conducted and taught at the site.

Atlantean Library Statement:

The Books of a Philosopher called Paracelsus were found in the Library after the Chronic Aberations started. In his writings we read: Paracelsus Nine Books Of the Nature of Things (1674) ix. 300, stated:

“Chaomancy shews its Signs by the Stars of the Air and Wind, by the discolouring, destroying of all tender and subtil things, to which the Wind is an enemy, by beating off the Flowers, Leaves, Boughs and Branches.

If the Stars of Chaomancy are moved, Spirits fall from the superiour Air, and Voices and Answers were often heard: Also Trees are pulled up by the Roots, and Houses are thrown down.

There are seen Hobgoblins, Household Gods, Airy Spirits, and Woodmen, &c. also a heavenly Dew and Manna falls upon Trees and Herbs.”

ORACULAR SYSTEMS TAUGHT:

The other forms of Chaomancy conducted and taught here include:

Aeromancy

The collective use of cloud formations, wind currents and cosmological events such as comets to attempt to divine the past, present or future.

Alectromancy

is conducted on rainy days, this is the observation of a roosters pecking at grain, and in some cases Rooster Fights.

Austromancy (wind divination)

the use of monitoring the direction and force of wind forces to determine the prophecy.

Avgiomancy (Dawn/Twilight/Rooster Divination)

A sub-group of this is Alectromancy for rainy days: by observation of a rooster pecking at grain, and in some cases Rooster Fights.

Ceraunoscopy (observing thunder and lightning)

this is included due to the chances that Zeus himself may become involved in a prophecy.

Chaomancy (aerial vision)

many argue that the purpose of the Eye of the Moon is to act as a screen or an oculus through which to observe the desires of the Gods and prophecies.

Meteormancy(meteors and shooting stars)

Nephomancy (cloud divination)

the observation of cloud shapes and movements, which can prophesize the future.

Each of these forms of divination are influenced by different Olympian Gods to a lesser or greater degree. In one case, we read of a Nephomantic Divination presented to an Oracle.
"She prayed to foresee the future by dream and prayed facing the rising sun. Her father prescribed and commanded her in a dream to pray toward the west. When she prayed, a cloud from the upper air stood around the sun, and became enlarged and took the shape of a man. Another cloud sheared off and rendered itself of equal size and took the shape of a wild lion. It went into a great rage and, having made a great chasm, the lion swallowed the man." - Damascii vitae Isidori reliquiae [Damascius's Life of Isidore]. Bibliotheca Graeca et Latina suppletoria

All of these forms of Prophecy are practiced at the Eye of the Moon temple and provide the Atlanteans with a direct connection to the will of the Gods - if only it is interpreted correctly.

Manifestation

The weather conditions and events around the Eye of the Moon are constantly recorded each day, with the time and date of every event noted, every observation is recorded in temple scrolls for interpretation, and correlations are sought between events in distant locations and the events in the heavens above the Eye. This allows the Oracles to have developed a strong understanding of Critical Prophecies that have developed over the centuries.

Localization

The skies above the Eye of the Moon are considered the most sacred in Atlantis - and the areas around the Temple are strongly protected by Elven Guardians and Rangers who are dedicated to the protection of the Temple precincts.
