Overview

Tyrian Purple (πορφύρα porphúra; Latin: purpura), also known as Phoenician red, Phoenician purple, royal purple, imperial purple, or imperial dye   This is a specific color used by Royalty in the Atlantean Court in place of it's unique blue on occasions of official visits from dignitaries of other city states, nations and foreign powers - including trans-planar.

Source

Tyrian purple, is a very scarce and expensive dye made from snails in the Tyre City region. It is greatly valued because of it's scarcity.

Material Characteristics

The resulting dye is often in powdered form, but just as equally can be stored in solution inside a bottle as a liquid.

Physical & Chemical Properties

The dye is inert and will dye anything to a hue of Tyrian Purple in color if the item is capable of being dyed.

Geology & Geography

This substance is uniquely produced around the city of Tyre - near the Western Coast of Atlantis. "twelve thousand snails of Murex brandaris yield no more than 1.4 g of pure dye, enough to colour only the trim of a single garment."

Origin & Source

It is a secretion produced by several species of predatory sea snails in the family Muricidae, rock snails originally known by the name 'Murex'. In ancient times, extracting this dye involved tens of thousands of snails and substantial labor, and as a result, the dye was highly valued.

Life & Expiration

This color is color-fast - it will only change gradually over time becoming brighter in hue.

History & Usage

History

Tyrian Purple is a dye that is exclusively used by characters above 8th level (in other words 'name or title' level, and they are allowed to sparingly use such a color as trim or on accessories only - only a royal blooded ch

Discovery

The dye was accidentally discovered by the dog of Hercules, some say that it was a philosopher - but many deaths at the hands of Scythian Barbarians have caused people to defer to their interpretation of events - which states that it was the Dog of Hercules the Demigod hero that discovered the dye for his master.

Distribution

Trade & Market

The trade of this substance is controlled and only Dyers of the Dyers Guild are permitted to sell it - even then it is only permitted to 9th level or higher characters or those of royal pedigree. However, if a character chooses to sell the substance than there is a large bonus given.

Storage

The substance does not fade and so can be stored as any normal powder or as a liquid. It is inert, non-flamable and non-toxic but will make the mouth go purple for up to 2D6 months if drunk.

Law & Regulation

Tyrian Purple is a dye that is exclusively used by characters above 8th level (in other words 'name or title' level, and they are allowed to sparingly use such a color as trim or on accessories only - only a royal blooded character may wear the color prior to 9th level and even then only on a SINGLE accessory of their choice.
