Series One Glossary

Aedon: A port and merchant city at the eastern tip of the Suzerainty of Muwati.
alis volat cum scientia: The motto of the Caeinarium which means she flies on the wings of science.
Anev: A coastal city of north-west Piniuan on the edge of Sesquanov Ocean with a large natural peninsula creating a deep water bay. A large metropolis city located on the northern Ventali coast line. Now the shipyard center of the Sesquanov Northwest, Anev was settled in the 850s and grew as a port and supply center during the early trade with the Achaia Dynastia from 997 to 2443 when the Ventali Empress built the current Capital Vental on the northern coast. Although the trade and commerce shipping has moved to Vental, Anev’s shipyards expanded to become the center of shipbuilding in the Ventali Empire.
Ankidyt: (see Year) the second month of winter. The eleventh month of the Duianna Year.
Augur Optimus: the potentate of Nacitas as head of the Nacitas Church. The Augur Optimus is responsible for interpreting and teaching the Holy Scrolls of Life and ensuring all people live according the desires of the Star Empresses recorded therein.
Ayzebel: A nation on the far southern part of the Ventali Continent famed for its warrior skills. The women of that nation never took part in wars instead opting to rent their men and tactician generals out as mercenaries for other country’s wars. When the nations finally coalesced under the Nacitas Church the entire nation was conscripted to be the honor guards for the church.
Bethel: a community church group with a dedicated set of priests specifically for for merchant marine commune members.
Caeinarium: the last and greatest achievement of the Crelna Institute for Science, an atmospheric airship capable of flying over 6 miles high at speeds exceeding 100 miles an hour. Initially designed and partially built by Professor Kimna Wilmius before being given to Lady Janali Jedalor, who re-engineered it as a multi-year expedition vessel.
Canishassa: goddess worshiped by the entire Cannili Island nation. Believed by many scholars to be one of the ten lost Sky Empresses.
Cannili: an independent island nation comprising the N Sesquanov islands of Cannili, Mintu, Hin, Oni, Ranilia, Aznili, and Duini: 5191 sq. mi. Capital: Shistana. Abbreviation: CI
Capstan: a vertical-axled rotating machine developed for use on sailing ships to apply force to ropes, cables, and hawsers. The principle is similar to that of the windlass, which has a horizontal axle.
Castatan: the is the family daughter named as the business overseer dealing with ongoing commercial operations within the family. The Castatan reports directly to the matriarch or scion if designated by the matriarch and is the second-in-command within the family. The matriarch or scion may name any family daughter castatan at any time.
Crelna: The Ventali Empire’s greatest city for universities and research. Houses a vast library and a multitude of research institutes, and academic schools ready to train anyone, for the right fee. The Empire has its military training academies in the walled off northern section of Crelna.
Diurdin: (adjective) Used for emphasis, especially to express anger or frustration. “It’s none of your diurdin business.”

Day: The 24-hour period during which the sun completes one dark and light cycle.
Diocese: an ecclesiastical district under the jurisdiction of a bishop consisting of ten or more bethels.
Egisbishop: a bishop of the highest rank who presides over an primusdiocese.
Frater: (plural fraters) a member of a commune or group.
Holy Nacitas Perlustration: an inquisition set up in the Ventali Empire in 14235 by the Nacitas Church to suppress the number of scientific and social advances that were seen as violating the Holy Nacitas Scrolls of Life that had governed the church and Empire since 10300. Perlustration officials are of two ranks Quaestums (seekers) and Potentates (primary or prince). Symbol: a circle inside of another circle; eight rays from the inner circle cut the encompassing circle into eight wedges and the vertical and horizontal rays extend slightly outside. 
Hour: One of the 24 equal parts of a day.
Inkionta: Canillian word ambassador, precisely translated to one who speaks with the voice of the Innonia.
Innadyt: (see Year) the third month of summer. The sixth month of the Duianna Year.
Innonia: Canillian word for chieftain, precisely translated as one who leads with permission (permission from whom is not exactly understood, generally considered permission from the high priestess known as the Matron of Cannili, but sometimes also refers to their goddess Canishassa).
Iodi: (see Week) the fifth day of the week.
Kishadyt: (see Year) the second month of fall. The eighth month of the Duianna Year.
Lahmudyt: (see Year) the third month of fall. The ninth month of the Duianna Year.
Lundi: (see Week) the second day of the week.
Male Commune: n an organization of men, known as fraters, with of various associations, as of merchants or artisans, organized to maintain standards and to protect the interests of its members, and including a governing body. A group of fraters living together in shared homes, sharing possessions, work, income, etc., associated in brotherly union, as for mutual aid or benefit.

Menadyt: (see Year) the first month of spring. The first month of the Duianna Year.
Merdi: (see Week) the fourth day of the week.
Minute: A period of time equal to 60 seconds or a 60th of an hour.
Month: A unit of time corresponding to one cycle of the moon’s phases, which is precisely twenty-eight days or four weeks.
Mount Canishast: a dormant volcano on the island of Cannili standing 17,521 feet above sea level. Named after the Canillian goddess Canishassa.
Mount Terrat: the tallest mountain in all the world standing over 6.75 miles measured from sea level. Located on the western side of the Ventali continent.
Nabudyt: (see Year) the first month of fall. The seventh month of the Duianna Year.
Nacitas: the holy city, built on the top of a stone mount whose top was sheared off exactly 1 mile above sea level by the gods explicitly to build the central hub of the world. The mountain would be over 10 miles tall if the top wasn’t missing. Nacitas marks the center of the Earth which is written in the scrolls to be exactly a flat disk exactly 12,000 miles in radius centered on the holy crystal in Nacitas.
Nanadyt: (see Year) the third month of spring. The third month of the Duianna Year.
Ninurdyt: (see Year) the third month of winter. The twelfth and last month of the Duianna Year.
Patredyt: (see Year) the second month of summer. The fifth month of the Duianna Year.
Perlustration: (see Holy Nacitas Perlustration)
Potentate: a high ecclesiastic appointed by the Augur Optimus to the Council of Potentates and ranking above every other ecclesiastic but the Augur Optimus.
Priest: 1) a member of the clergy of the order next below that of Quaestum, authorized to carry out the church ministry. 2) a person whose office it is to perform religious rites, and to oversee a bethel.
Premier Potentates: Six elevated Potentates chosen exclusively on the word of the Augur Optimus as his privy council. Once chosen they rarely leave his presence except when on express errands for the Augur Optimus and then in pairs only.
Primusdiocese: the diocese of an Egisbishop consisting of a group of four or more dioceses.
Princeps Optimus of the Perlustration: the potentate of appointed by the Augur Optimus at will to be the head of the Holy Nacitas Perlustration. The Princeps Optimus of the Perlustration is responsible for instructing, overseeing, and controlling all aspects and operations of the Holy Nacitas Perlustration.
Professor Hanni Ontal: The professor of chemical sciences for the Crelna Institute for Science.
Professor Kimna Wilmius: The professor of physical and atmospheric sciences for the Crelna Institute for Science. First woman to fly in a hot air balloon.
Quaestum: a special ecclesiastic rank for the Perlustration appointed by the Augur Optimus or a Potentate and ranking next below a bishop but above a priest. Quaestum Priests are free to roam any lands on the rights of the Perlustration.
Samudyt: (see Year) the first month of summer. The fourth month of the Duianna Year.
Saturdi: (see Week) the seventh and last day of the week.
Scion: a family daughter who has been named the successor to the matriarch. Once officially named the scion immediately takes over the daily business of family oversight consulting with the matriarch as needed. The matriarch remains the family head with total authority over the scion. The scion is normally the first born daughter of the matriarch, except for extremely rare cases of severe disabilities.
Second: The smallest unit of time measurable by available clocks and is of time equal to one-sixtieth of a minute.
Sesquanov Ocean: an ocean bordered by the Ventali continents, Split Dynastia, Independent Islands, and the western edge of the world, largest ocean in the world. Originally called Ocean Sescenta Quadraginta Novem in early writings of the Ventali Empire. The name was shortened over time.
Sharludyt: (see Year) the first month of winter. The tenth month of the Duianna Year.
Shistana: Capital of Cannili island nation, on the western side of Cannili Island. Pop 34,900.
Slack Water: A short period in a body of tidal water when the water is completely unstressed, and therefore no movement either way in the tidal stream, and which occurs before the direction of the tidal stream reverses. Common usage is to describe the the state of the tide when it is turning, especially at low tide. Slack water lasts for about two hours centered on the period before the turning of the tide from coming in to going out (high to low), and going out to coming in (low to high).

Split Dynastia: the northern continent of the world. Once a single Dynastia known as Achaia but when the Queen Zannanza died without an heir the Dynastia was split between her three remaining sisters. Her eldest sister took the main part of the continent renaming it the Suzerainty of Zannanza after her dead sister. The next sister in line, Menasua, took the north wester portion which was named the Suzerainty of Menasua after the first queen. The northern portion was given to the youngest sister Muwati as it was very mountainous, small, and considered unimportant, all qualities which described Muwati. However, large deposits of gold and silver were discovered in the mountains of Muwati, making the small isolated Suzerainty the richest of the three.
Stlocus Hacius Palace: (believed to be a slurring of centrum locum in excelsis from the ancient language of the Star Empresses, roughly the high center place) is an ancient palace built by and for Star Empress Gwenna Duianna. Constructed in the top of the great axel of Terra. It was sealed from the final attack of the void until rediscovered on Patredyt 12, 318 by Augur Optimus Niatrum, the fourth augur optimus. It remained sealed until Nanadyt 3, 515 when Empress Alsenna Yal-Ventali confirmed her true lineage by commanding its doors to open. On Nanadyt 3, 535 Empress Alsenna Yal-Ventali moved the Ventali capital to the new port city of Vental decreeing Nacitas to be dedicated to holy purposes only making the Stlocus Hacius Palace the formal permanent residence for the augur optimus.

Tarudyt: (see Year) the second month of spring. The second month of the Duianna Year.
Theodolite: a precision instrument for measuring angles in the horizontal and vertical planes.
Untash-Gal: the far northern capital of the Suzerainty of Muwati, one of the three split Dynastia.
Vibrius: The Vibrius is a Ventalian cargo ship, owned by House Jedalor. He was built in 14343 in the Anev shipyards under the direct supervision of Lady Janali Jedalor, Jedalor Castatan. It was thought lost in an ocean storm on Nanadyt 24, 14343 under the command of Captain Reinvo. It later returned to Vental 180 days later on Sharludyt 8, 14343 with the fantastic story of having been beyond the edge of the world. Displacement: 2,874 tons load draught, Length: 284 ft, Beam: 46 ft 5 in, Draught: 15 ft, Crew: 46, Propulsion: 2 x screw propeller, Auxiliary Propulsion: sails, Sail plan: Three-masted (schooner-rigged), Max speed: 34 knots (under steam).

Vental: Capital city of the Ventali Empire, population ~250,000.
Ventali Empire: The great demesne of Her Majesty Empress Hecuba Ventali, the direct descendant of heirs to the legendary Duianna Empire. Established before written history.
Warping: move (a ship) along by hauling on a rope attached to a stationary object on shore. In practice sailors will attach a line to the ship’s docking capstan, then row out to attach the other end to a dock piling near the mouth of the harbor. Then they'd wind the capstan to haul the ship into harbor against a strong current or if the wind was unfavorable for approaching the harbor.
Week: A period of seven days. The Duianna Imperial names for the days are Solidi (Sunday), Lundi (Monday), Martidi (Tuesday), Merdi (Wednesday), Iodi (Thursday), Vendi (Friday), and Saturdi (Saturday).
Windlass: a device for raising or hauling objects, usually consisting of a horizontal cylinder or barrel turned by a crank, lever, motor, or the like, upon which a cable, rope, or chain winds, the outer end of the cable being attached directly or indirectly to the weight to be raised or the thing to be hauled or pulled; winch.
Writs of Indulgence: a legal document issued by a church official for the remission of temporal punishment for confessed sins through penance, good works or almsgiving.
