Varla Carford
Captain Varla Carford is the Bailiff of Raven's Rock Keep, a specific job title that makes her the de-facto Sheriff and civil police commander of the entire Keep region, specifically the Lower Bailey and the farmlands and countryside associated with and surrounding the structure itself. While the soldiers and archers on the walls enforce the peace, she is tasked with maintaining law and order and seeing that civil laws are followed, and assisting in the identification of crimes, evidence, and criminals for processing by the court and the Countess' current Legal Advisor.
Her long-time companion is a woman named Annabeth Holua, a dyemaker and chemist by trade.
Varla seems to get along well with all the higher-ranking officials as well as her subordinates, and has been a good friend to Kador Hyanada, who was recently promoted from captain of the Upper Bailey to captain of the watch, making him Varla's boss and a level of supervision between herself and the Castellan. While not begrudging him his promotion, she feels certain he's not really qualified for it, and is confused as to how exactly he received such an honor from the Castellan, who had to literally make up the position; technically she was the Sheriff, and he was responsible only for keeping order and discipline in the upper Bailey. The two had an argument about it a couple of days ago and have been cold toward each other ever since.
Compounding the difficulty is Annabeth's wandering eye; the two are obviously committed to each other but she's had several episodes of too much drink in the Silver Spade or in the Fired Miners Pub in the upper bailey, creating some public embarrassment when she wandered off one night with one of the card players and was found in the wee hours asleep on the side of the fountain. Carford confided to her friends - Montague Ford, Alba Filorene and others - that they talked about it, but one gets the feeling that she's got other priorities and many things she'd rather do than babysit an alcoholic girlfriend.
