S1 E28: Into Marleven

General Summary

In which the gang finishes a fight and starts a new phase of adventure.
  • Without a great deal of trouble the party manages to destroy the Star Spawn invaders from - well, wherever they're from. The Grue types were shrieky but weak, the Manglers were handsy to be sure and took a beating before they went down. The creatures had fought back, obviously, but they also seemed like they wanted to throw the party into the portal they came from. Once dispatched, a dispel magic spell popped the bubble out of existence.
  • The creatures had a number of odd items including lead cabochons with the tripartate name, "Borem/Murk/Gorgasuul". They had lots of coins, but made of tin and squared off, with a hole in the center suggesting they could be easily strung into bundles, though these were loose. The emblem on the coins read, in deep speech, "Death Seeks Weakness". They also had 9 omens, most if not all of which seemed to have been fulfilled, and more than a few of them fulfilled by the party themselves.
  • They complete the rest of the journey to the Indigo River ferry quays without incident, though they're hassled briefly by a customs agent at the passage. The pilot of the barge shoos him off. At the other side, they meet up with the Kannet Colonial Mining wagon they had met on the road, and the driver, a Dwarf named Rolli (Raleigh) tells them Kannet is hiring "people of action" like them as fast as they can for exorbitant sums in various 'enforcer' roles. He also locks up another unruly customs agent in his cart, and the fact that the party doesn't make much of a fuss about it seems to impress him.
  • They enter the city through the main gate and along the Grand Promenade, a long market road lined with shops and food vendors of all descriptions. Dumplings, noodle stands, trinkets and curios, handbags and shoes, linens and cloth, cookware, jewelry, baked goods, fish stands, blown glass, live animals - all tumbled together and tumbling out from shops and junk stands stretching from the main gate to the horse track. They meet a copper dragonborn named Gwinith who is a plumber for the city. She mentions watery beings climbing out of the city fountains and pronouncing doom, and suggests the party check in with the City Post or the MUG - the Magic User's Guild - if they want to help rid the city of nuisances of that nature.
  • They learn that Yuan Ti have been spotted in and around the ancient temple to Danildee, the patron goddess of the city, Lady of luck, good fortune, beauty and bright colors, but for the moment they're not causing any particular trouble and the goddess has many chapels and temples in the city. They also hear of a clan of Tortles who sell real estate from the Northeast district. Fauns/Satyrs such as Mae congregate in the Vhurta Cashew Groves on the east side tended by a druidic order of the same name. The Telentine Orphanage is near there as well. And they hear about the combat arena at the north end of the city where gladiators compete for accolades and cash money.
  • They know where the Kannet Colonial Mining headquarters are, but are undecided on the best plan of attack. It seems clear that they ought to do something more subtle than simply walking in and declaring that vengeance is here. And while the leadership of Kannet may all be to blame for what happened to Lorfel's island, the regular joes working for them probably aren't. Plotting revenge may require some plotting, after all. In the meantime there seems to be no lack of other adventures to pursue in Marleven.
