The Demonguard

When the demons appeared and destroyed the old kingdom in the north, the great wall was built to keep them from entering our land. Of course, a wall is of no use without someone guarding it. These men and women are the Demonguard, the most important unit of the military in Venarius. It is their achievement that all of us can lead a comparatively safe life, free from attacks of those vile creatures who dwell on the other side of the wall. Without them, the land on which we stand right now would be as desolate, as it is on the other side! That is why today, we celebrate our heroes on the wall.
— Beginning of a speech by the Highcommander of Venarius

Composition

Manpower

The Demonguard consists of about 150.000 brave soldiers, organised in smaller units and spread out all along the wall. Most of them are stationed in small and narrow quarters situated atop the wall itself and hardly get to leave this station. They endure this because they know without them, the wall would fall and with the wall the entire kingdom would soon be under demon rule.

Equipment

Most members of the Demonguard are archers, with the arrow and bow as their most important tool. As watching out for demon attacks is their primary duty, spyglasses, as well as signal horns, flags, and torches for communication with neighbouring stations, are also vital to their task.

Structure

The Demonguard is very well structured. At their core is an individual unit, composed of 5 archers. The most experienced among these archers leads the unit. Additionally, each unit has one further person, who is responsible for scouting, signalling and carrying. Each such unit is responsible for a 100m section of the wall.   Since a unit needs to be deployed to their section of a wall quickly in case of an emergency, the units live atop the wall. To ease the logistics of that, they live together in guards of 10 units, that is 50 people. These guards are located atop the wall every kilometre of the wall, which still allows quick deployment of the troops. The leader of the most senior unit also is in charge of the entire guard. At all times, one of the scouts is on duty atop the wall to watch out for attacks or signals from neighbouring towers.   When talking about the Deminguard a tower is not only a physical building but also the next higher level of organization. Such towers are built every 10 kilometres of the wall and from there the 5 guards to its left and right are commanded and supplied. Every tower has an entrance to the wall from the non-demon side of the wall. In addition to the 10 guards commanded by a tower, it consists of the so-called auxiliary guard which is comprised of
  • 3 units (5 people) of scouts who watch the demon lands and signals from the neighbouring towers at all times.
  • 3 units of logistics workers who acquire food and equipment from neighbouring towns and bring them to the tower.
  • 1 unit of logistics workers who distribute food and equipment to the guards.
  • 3 units of swordsmen who protect the tower from attackers and robbers from the "inside".
  • one wizard, who is able to magically communicate with the command centre in Venarius
The leader of this auxiliary guard also commands the tower.   The next higher level is the gate. It is named this way because every ninth tower also has a gate to the demon lands. At these gates, a larger force of infantry is stationed, who can reach each of the three towers to the right and left within a day's march, should a larger force of demons be spotted that is marching towards them. The gate also has additional cavalry units for information gathering beyond the sight range of the towers.   The Domonguard in total consists of 22 gates, as well as additional strategists and their commander at the command centre in Venarius. In addition to that, three Wizards capable of teleportation and summoning storms is stationed here. Should any of the towers spot a larger flying force of demons, they can magically inform the command centre and these wizards can respond quickly and force the flying demons to land, where they can safely be dealt with.

Logistics

Upkeep

The upkeep of such a large force is tremendously high. It pays about 6 billion gold coins a month. But the people of Venarius know it is well worth it.

Interesting, simple, but well written. It's unfortunate you can't provide a bit more context, I'd love to know more about the history, how the wall was built, what conflicts and wars led to its creation, how they kept the demons at bay while it was made, and so forth. Still an enjoyable read, well done.
