The Feywild

The Feywild, also known as Faerie, is a world residing within a plane of existence parallel to the Prime Material Plane. This plane is the homeworld of the elves, and it is believed to be the origin of Arcane Magic.

Characteristics

Compared to the Prime Material Plane, the Feywild is a world abundant with arcane magic, to the point where it is completely suffused within the plane's environment and ecosystems. The result is a world rich with strange and sometimes whimsical locations populated with strange and alien creatures that have adapted to this high-magic environment. While often beautiful, the world of the fey is no less rife with danger than the world of Teranuz; perhaps even more so, in fact.   Perhaps the most unusual characteristic of the Feywild is the plane's relationship to the passage of time. For reasons not fully understood, the "planet" that composes the Feywild is perpetually frozen in a single moment in time, meaning that time does not pass within the plane as normal. As such, visitors to the plane may find themselves in the Feywild for what feels like weeks, months or even years, only to return to their native plane to discover that almost no time has passed at all.   Because there is no passage of time, the world of Faerie does not rotate like Teranuz does, meaning that there is no day-night cycle within the Feywild. Instead, the world of the fey is split into two hemispheres: one of perpetual daylight and one of perpetual night. These two hemispheres are each marked as the respective territories of the two Fey Courts: the Seelie court which commands the lands of perpetual day, and the Unseelie Court which rules over the lands of endless night. An equator of sorts, known as the Twilit Border, is ostensibly neutral territory, though it is known to be the meeting place of choice for the hag covens that refuse to align with either court.   Unlike Teranuz, the night sky of the Feywild contains only one moon, referred to by the peoples of the fey as Sarastra.

Magic

Arcane Magic is believed to have originated in the Feywild, and was introduced to the Prime Material Plane when the first elven visitors set foot on Teranuz. How exactly this would have occurred is unknown, but has led to centuries of speculation from Teranuz's leading arcanists.   Among some of the wilder theories on the nature of magic, some arcane scholars have hypothesized that the magic of the Feywild is, in itself, a "living, metaphysical organism" with some limited degree of sentience. As the theory claims, magic, like any other organism, is driven by a need to reproduce, and does so by forming a symbiotic (or parasitic, depending on who you ask) relationship with other creatures capable of learning and casting spells. In essence, this would mean that whenever a spell is cast, the end result somehow contributes to the reproductive process of magic, in a way that could be seen as comparable to insects assisting the reproductive systems of plants via pollination.   Of course, not all view this theory in such a benign and symbiotic light. The Kenku of Keshari, for example, view the introduction of arcane magic to Teranuz as a "contamination" or "infection", implying that magic is perhaps more akin to a highly contagious virus as opposed to a pollinating flower. Either way, until the question of magic's origin is answered definitively, these speculative notions will largely remain a matter of metaphysical, theological or philosophical opinion.

Inhabitants

In addition to being the home plane of the elves, the Feywild is home to entire ecosystems of fey creatures unique to its plane of existence. Among the other intelligent races of the Feywild are the centaurs and saytrs of the Seelie lands, as well as creatures native to Unseelie realms such as boggles, redcaps and darklings.   The Twilit Border is known to be the home of various hag covens, each vying for control of their narrow strip of the fey, as well as their Hexblood offspring conceived with elven, or occasionally even human parentage.
