Teranuz - Planet

Teranuz is the name of a planet located within the Prime Material Plane. It is the primary setting for campaigns set within the Teranuz campaign setting.

Overview

Teranuz is a planet slightly larger than the planet Earth; it is the first planet in its solar system, orbiting a yellow dwarf star in a 371-day cycle. Additionally, the planet is orbited by two moons, one slightly larger than the other; the inhabitants of the Crestfall continent refer to these moons by the names Maior (the larger of the two) and Novus (the smaller).

Creation and Timeline

Main article: Timeline of Teranuz   The origin of the planet of Teranuz, as well as the exact age of the planet itself, is a point of conjecture among the world's leading scientific and religious minds. While each major religion on the planet has its own creation myth to explain the world's existence, others have postulated that the planet itself is a naturally-occurring celestial body that has existed for somewhere between 3-5 billion years. As of this time of writing, no definitive answer to the question of Teranuz's origin has been confirmed.   In the timeline of the Vancian Calendar, Teranuz is currently in the year 999 ME (Modern Era), otherwise known as the Age of Humanity.

Calendar

A single year on Teranuz is 371 days, with each day lasting 24 hours. The standard measure of timekeeping for most of Teranuz's civilized world is the Vancian Calendar, itself a modified version of the original Elven calendar and retaining many aspects of its original terminology.   The Vancian Calendar divides the year into 10 months; each month consists of 37 days, with the exception of the final month, Quell, which has 38. Each of the months is associated with a zodiac, corresponding with a specific constellation visible from the night sky over Teranuz. The names of the months and their corresponding zodiacs are as follows:
  • Sunder (The Fool)
  • Veil (The High Priestess)
  • Viridi (The Deer)
  • Ochre (The Eagle)
  • Fulgor (The Archmage)
  • Dimmer (The Wolf)
  • Lambent (The Scholar)
  • Harvest (The Huntsman)
  • Noctem (The Devil)
  • Quell (The Dragon)
Each month is further broken down into 7-day weeks, with each day of the week being bearing its own name as well:
  • Vanguard
  • Venture
  • Render
  • Rally
  • Respite
  • Zenith
  • Solace
Additionally, the twin moons of Teranuz operate on separate lunar cycles: Maior, the larger moon, has a cycle lasting 39 days, while Novus, the smaller moon, has a cycle of 13 days. Because of these independent cycles, the phases of both moons only synchronize twice every month: two nights in which both moons are full, and two nights in which both moons enter their "new" phase. The phases of the moon hold different forms of cultural and spiritual significance depending on region.

Cosmology

Main article: Cosmology of Teranuz   Teranuz is located within the Prime Material Plane. However, various geographic locations on the planet, dubbed "Convergence Zones", exist in places where the barriers separating the planes of existence are thinner, allowing the potential for inter-planar travel under certain conditions.

Magic

Main article: Magic of Teranuz   On Teranuz and its adjoining planes of existence, it is possible to manipulate and alter the laws of the natural world using a system referred to as "magic". Magic in the Modern Era is typically divided into two broad categories: Arcane Magic and Divine Magic.

Geographic Locations

  CONTINENTS
  • Crestfall: A large continent within the planet's Western hemisphere; named for the Elven word cresdvol, meaning "Earthen Throne". Crestfall is a continent mired in a history of conflict, and is home to a diverse and eclectic collection of intelligent races.
  • The Enkidu Archipelago: A collection of islands located in the middle of the Eastern Sea, believed to have been formed by past eruptions of the now-dormant volcano at the archipelago's center. Each island that makes up the archipelago is inhabited by a unique race of animal-like humanoids, each with their own society and culture; for this reason, the archipelago is sometimes referred to by outsiders as the "Beastland Isles".
