Tabaxi

Tabaxi are feline humanoids which can be found in various regions across the continent of Crestfall. The tabaxi race are the descencdants of Leonin captives who were brought to the continent from the Enkidu Archipelago during the Pre-Vancian Era.

Appearance

Like their Leonin ancestors, the tabaxi are distinctly catlike in appearance; unlike the Leonin however, which are unilversally lionlike, tabaxi are widely varied in terms of physical traits, likely as a consequence of their origin.   Tabaxi come in a variety of shapes and sizes, many of which corresponding to the myriad breeds of non-sapient felines, from the big cats of the wild to domestic breeds.

Traits and Abilities

Much like their non-humanoid counterparts, the feline tabaxi are quick and agile, armed with keen eyesight and sharp claws on their hands and feet. Due to their high speed and stamina, many tabaxi native to regions such as Drang are often employed as messengers and couriers, as they are able to cover great stretches of distance in little time even without the aid of a steed of vehicle.   Also like ordinary cats, tabaxi are also natural-born climbers, with many able to scale surfaces such as walls and trees with ease even at a young age. This can lead to the sowing of distrust in some communities, believing that the tabaxi's climbing ability makes them more inclined towards burglary. As a result, tabaxi children are often taught to refrain from climbing objects in public to avoid landing in trouble with the local authorities.

History

During the Pre-Vancian Era, Elf invaders from The Feywild eventually breached the Enkidu Archipelago, capturing several of the island chain's native inhabitants for use in magical experiments. Among those captured were members of the Leonin race, who were taken west to Crestfall, where the elves' Eladrin courts held the most presence on Teranuz.   After the events of the Millennium War, the descendants of these captures Leonin, now heavily altered from experimentation, were finally freed from their elven captors, allowing them to spread their population freely across the continent.   Many Crestfallen tabaxi worship the Cat Lord, believed to be a transposed deity from a prototypical version of the Leonin's pantheon. Due to the the mischievous and anti-authoritative messaging found in folklore surrounding the Cat Lord, worship of the deity is often discouraged in primarily non-tabaxi societies, such as the Hegian Empire; as such, followers of the Cat Lord often share and pass on the tenets of their deity in secret, either through oral tradition or through written stories encoded in the cypher known as Thieves' Cant.
