The trade language used by the known world was popularized and spread by the now-vanished empire of Talia Carte. Closely bonded with their fey neighbors, the nation converted a dialect of Sylvan, formalizing it with structures and tenses until it no longer resembled its parent language excepting in a stray verb. As they overtook methods of commerce and transportation, their official language took over other languages as well, until it simply became accepted as the "Common" tongue of the world.
