Noumia

Written by Vertixico

Since I have to start writing somewhere, talking about the planet these people inhabit is the logical first step. Best thing to do is go at all of this as systematical as possible, with no distractions at all.

The Planet of Noumia

This planet is called by its inhabitants "Noumia", which in some old and long forgotten but way too idealized language apparently means "Green Jewel". Let's contemplate for a moment the fact that both the sky and the water covering most of this planet are more of a blue-violet color and that most vegetation on this planet has more of a yellow-brownish tint. Let it sink in that these people have no problem at all, despite these facts, to call their planet green.

But what can you expect from a people that still is not completely convinced their planet is - more or less - a sphere? Even their biggest church wised up enough to preach the spherical nature of their planet, but some stubborn folk just wants to believe the wrong things I guess.

Noumia has six continents, of which three in the northern hemisphere are connected via small land-bridges. As I already said most of the planet is covered in water, making the seas the most prominent feature of Noumia.

Looking up

Or, maybe the second most prominent feature. Did I already mention the moons? Noumia does not even consider having a normal amount of moons - it does not have one or two moons, Noumia has in total 15 satellites in a more or less stable orbit. Apparently, over the past centuries, that number has occasionally changed, either by a collision of moons, catching a new satellite into the orbit, catastrophic entering of a moon into the atmosphere or at one point a simple miscounting.

These moons are on one hand the legendary seats of various deities - because of course, they are - and on the other hand actual colonies of the people of Noumia. I am still not completely sure, how they manage to travel to these places but they do. I regularly check this with my self-made telescope.

About time

At least both the seasons and the length of days are somewhat sensible. The year has a length of roughly three hundred days, with each of the four seasons lasting roughly sixty days. You could argue that neither the cold nor the warm season is particularly extreme, but honestly - I prefer this over the alternative. Personally, I am not fond of harsh winters or searing summers as I would usually believe to be normal.

The length of a day is divided into 22 completely arbitrary units, called hours. Each hour has 100 minutes so at least here they use a sensible amount of units. The hour at or better around the highest point of the sun and its nightly equivalent have a special meaning, being called the hour of light and of darkness. I am certain this is some religious nonsense, but even the more sensible, atheistic people seem to avoid making loud noises during that time.
