The Athedal Empire
"We have studied the ancient empire ever since its downfall. It is a surprise how it ended so; the technology it had, the weapons at their disposal, yet it fell to the hubris of its emperor's own design. I cannot say whether I can fathom the machinations of the lords of the time, but I can tell you that how it happened shaped how we live our lives today; such is the way of history...
-A Gnomish professor to her students
The Athedal Empire, before its downfall, was a world-spanning empire that held great majesty and power of the lands it controlled. It requested authority and received it, demanded magic and obtained it, and over sought the needs of billions of people under their banners.
They developed powerful technlogies, and mighty warships that could carry massive amounts of people and cargo vast distances without being impaired. Their soldiers were equipped with the best gear, and those who rebelled against the empire were met with a force be reckoned with.
To top all of this off. Seven great heroes stood with the Emperor during his reign. They advised him on certain matters, helped in major battles, and even acted as figures of public relations when morale was low. Their time in the empire was resplendent, until a time of complacency and stagnation caused a Emperor consumed by greed to be their downfall.
He convinced Moradin, The Forge of Servants to kill the child of a Cosmic being to grant the both of them more power, only for that entity, known as The Father, to open the Gates of Zarahel and undo all the Empire was. It was short and bloody war, but it caused many to go into hiding and have to rebuild the world as they knew it, no longer united.
Structure
1. Athedal Emperor - The final say the largest matters of the empire. They declare imperial taxes, laws, and who is appointed as regional lords.
2. Regional Lords - Lords chosen to occupy certain regions. They collect taxes, impose regional laws, and organize local militias to protect the peoples.
3. Archbishops - Leaders of churches in regions that spread the religion of their deities. They coordinate the religious state of affairs within the empire's territories.
4. Marshals - Military leaders who command the military might of the empire. They travel from region to region, making sure each militia is properly equipped while fighting rebellions with their own armies.
Culture
The Athedal Empire spanned many cultures, considering the presence across the globe. However, the central authority had a culture that can be described as something akin to a mix of Indian and Aftrican influences. The main culture is a strong, role-based society that is heavily swayed by the religious influences.
Assets
At the time, the Athedal Empire had access to every resource, and had various means to transport them. Stone-engraved teleportation circles could transport small groups of resources and people, while the massive vessels transported cumbersome cargo and massive armies from continent to continent.
Disbandment
The Athedal Empire fell during the opening of the Gates of Zarahel. When the gates opened, hordes of fiends spewed out and layed waste to the empires cities, desolating civilization as they knew it. Only by divine intervention did the apocalypse end.
