When Zereck learned magic, he had great ambition for his people in The Athedal Empire. He saw a future where they could conquer not just their plane, but those of other planes as well. He aspired to be the greatest ruler of his people, and devised a plan to do so. 
He coerced Moradin, The Forge of Servants to obtain the energy from the child of a cosmic being to allow his naval ships to obtain interplanar travel through research and arcane technology. Through pressure and constant prayer, the god obliged, only to kill the child and agitate the cosmic force which governs the reality of this universe; The Father. 
When the Gates of Zarahel opened, Zereck did not know what to do. He was taken to his chambers, where he saw the hordes of demons destroy his city from his runes of protection. He could not stand it, but instead of help his people, he fled underground to a tomb of his own design, where he would rest forever until the resting place was tampered with.
