The Hungry Stones

Far below the Landzide Mountains of Taisha, deep below the surface of the planet, yawns the massive subsidence cavern now known as the Kukiri Chasm. Home to many dangerous and aberrant creatures, the folklore around it has grown to epic proportions amongst Dwarfdom.

One of, if not the most prevalent tales is that of the hungry stones of Kukiri Chasm. Stalagmites and stalagtites that have gained a hunger for salt, these growths can potentially be found anywhere within the darkness of the chasm. Resembling long tongues, hanging from open maws, the "creatures" are not organic. They are silica based...but the twisted and corrupting magics of the chasm changed them essentially, causing them to hunger, and prey upon any creature that has a trace of salt within. The creatures will casually brush a potential meal, tasting them for salt.

If any amount of salt is found, they will attack! Flooding the cavern with a paralytic chemical, the Hungry Stones will try to encase the victims in calcium, and break them down into their core components. They do this with no overt malice, except for the ill will Kukiri Chasm holds towards all outsiders. The dead amongst the caverns are always restless, they say; tales of hauntings and will'o'wisps leading young dwarves to their dooms abound within Dwarvenholme. Very often, the more fantastical the tale, the more truth there is to it.
