Big Daddy Eustace Scrubb Kaine, Esq (a.k.a. Boss man)
Auntie Kate's counterpart. He is a colorful fellow, with a huge personality and an even bigger hat. Despite his imposing and somewhat dangerous demeanor, he has a heart of gold and will never forget the little guy; the poor people he grew up among were the salt of the earth.

Personal history
Kaine's history is long and convoluted, seemingly more at home in the pages of some fantastical children's tale. But, in a nutshell;
kidnapped when he was young, he served aboard various merchant ships, until the Merchant and Sailors' Guild caught wind of the slavers that held him captive. All the young Kaine knew, at the time, was that shadows seemed to slip over the railings of the boat. Heartbeats later, however, something very unusual happened indeed; the first mate stumbled out on deck, wide eyed, as if wondering at some cosmic epiphone. The blood that erupted from his mouth, however, soon belied that notion to the lad. When the mate fell, the wound in his back was clear for everyone to see. There was suddenly a new Captain, and a new mate, and he had been set-to holy stoning the stain left by the pooling of First Mate Harlton.
He and the other crew were scared; one slaver was most assuredly not like another; some were mean to a fault, others were nice enough, if only because they didn't want to spoil their product. This boat had been the latter, only the captain had been a drunkard, and a mean one at that. The crew's fears were soon ameliorated by the complete lack of anything even resembling disrespect. In fact, every time the ship put in, leave was granted for all, on rotating shifts. Pay was fair. Work was hard, but so was the play, and Kaine enjoyed his cut of that trips takings at each and every dockage. He always came back, loving the job more and more, loving the crew and officers and sense of belonging they all felt, for themselves and each other. Emotions built around countless storms that threatened to engulf them all were merely strengthened each time they survived, and the crew became a well oiled machine. He was voted into mate. Then first mate, then navigator. By the time Kaine retired from the Althea, he had turned down the captain's job three times.
Not much is known about him after that, except for the fact that he and Sophie Lyons somehow hooked up and fell in love. Now, he runs the on-the-level side of Kate's Lads; real estate developers, banks, small governments, and the like.
