Aralind Silk Material in Tellus | World Anvil

Aralind Silk

More commonly known as 'plain old spider silk', Aralind silk is anything but ordinary. With a tensile strength along the lines of fifteen times that of the common1 silkworm, these gossamer strands of periwinkle blue are fantastic fibers for making protective clothing and armors that are resistant to force, radiant and cold damage, for instance. It is more commonly used to make rope and rigging for the Singers massive Ràcan Glainne. The ships of the glass sea are marvels of engineering and innovation. Entire Singer clans can live aboard one of these lovingly shaped and crafted vehicles; but the entire thing runs because of Aralind spider silk. Able to make long, yet thin (and therefore light) control and support rigging was certainly a huge part of the evolution of these awe inspiring vessels. Being able to weave sails light enough, yet flexible and strong enough, to capture and tame the notoriously fickle winds and heat storms coming off of the Open Glass. There are very few situations in which a Ràcan Glainne's sails will rip or fail.

Properties

Material Characteristics

It is a translucent periwinkle blue, with a bit of a cheeky sheen to it that all the girls will simply adore! It is not very elastic (at all), and unless treated/processed correctly, loses about 20% of it's tensile strength upon getting wet. It is luxuriant, and smooth, and used in everything from ship's anchor lines to womens' lingerie.

Physical & Chemical Properties

It is a smooth (dare I say silky?) material that is cool to the touch. It does not conduct heat or electricity very well, and the cold does not affect it at all.

Compounds

It is comprised of a longish, fibrous protein called fibroin; and a sticky protein called. sericin

Geology & Geography

The silk is woven into intricate webs that farm moisture from the air of the tunnels and rooms on the hills north east of Glaine Cuan.

Origin & Source

The silk is extruded by Aralind spiders.
