Scope

The motivation behind building Telluria

Telluria is a thought experiment that has arisen out of more than two decades of curiosity, inquiry and creative expression. It is an effort to create on a grand scale a realistic world similar to Earth in every way, but in every way distinct and apart from Earth. In particular, it is an effort to explore a present-day world that does not benefit from the extraordinary technological advances that arose out of necessity as a result of the demands of WWII, such as jet propulsion, rocketry and nuclear weaponry, as well as the follow-on technologies of the cold war and space race eras that followed. It is a world where the democratic impulses of nineteenth-century Earth did not take hold as firmly, resulting in fewer republics and a greater tendency toward monarchy than is seen in modern times on Earth.

The goal of the project

I hope to create a rich, textured, fully detailed world that can form the setting for a variety of creative projects.

Telluria's Unique Selling point

Telluria is unique and interesting because it is presented as an actual physical place existing in our current universe, mirroring our world. Yet at the same time it is a fantasy planet that can provide a backdrop for any number of creative endeavors. There are ancient settings, and a medieval golden age, and a modern technological war in the not-so-distant past, the aftermath of which is still impacting the lives of the populace.

Theme

Genre

It is difficult to select a specific genre for this world. A possible description might be a dieselpunk science fiction setting.

Reader Experience

This world should feel familiar and perhaps nostalgic, yet a bit disturbing in its subtle strangeness, with the lingering reminders of the last war still constantly impacting daily life, and a sense that a worse disaster is yet to come. The people react by assuming a false optimistic outlook, and maintaining a devil-may-care attitude. Nightlife and leisure are the focus of most. Intoxication is commonplace, as people struggle to keep out the bad thoughts.

Reader Tone

This is a world of exuberance and optimism, with a foreboding darkness lurking around every corner. The people go about their lives seemingly without a care, trying to put the impending disaster out of their minds.

Character Agency

A general feeling of being caught up in events beyond one's control is pervasive. Most people have given up trying to influence their governments, and simply accept things as they are. Yet there are some who refuse to abandon their individuality or renounce their commitment to community.
