Nemedid Caliphate

The Nemedid Caliphate (/'nem.ed.ɪd/ Nemidic: αλΧᾱλιϕαχ αλ'Νεμεδίαχ, riadicised: alKhālifah al-Nemedīyah), officially The Office of the Caliphate, historically controlled by the ruling family of the Nemedian State, is the institution with authority over all politico-religious matters within the Tariq faith and the territories and peoples under Tariq rule. For centuries coextant with the territorial jurisdiction of the Nemedian Empire, since the 1915 devolution of the empire the jurisdiction of the Caliphate has exceeded the boundaries of the country of Nemed alone, to include the Mahbubist states of Betenos, Caicher, Fenios, Jubalcain and Mahalalel, as well as the broader Tariq community across the world.

The Caliph is considered to be the spiritual successor to the prophet-king Nemeth I, who is recognized as the founder of the Tariq religion. As such, the Caliph wields tremendous spiritual and temporal power over followers of Tariq. The office of the Caliph was established in 486 upon the death of Nemeth I, at which time his oldest son, Nadath, assumed the political and military leadership of the Nemedian Emirate, while his second son, Midhat, succeeded his father as religious leader of the new Tariq faith. Upon the death of Midhat in 499,1 Nadath assumed the role of Caliph, consolidating the leadership of the state and the religious community in himself. Nadath was the first Caliph to style himself "Commander of the Faithful" (Εμιρ αλ’Μυμινιν, riadicized: Emir al’Muminin), a title retained by Nemedian Caliphs to present times.

The Caliph's authority is primarily epistemic, based upon personal merit, and rooted in the community's perception of superior knowledge and experience in both religious and worldly affairs. The Caliph is presumed to possess a "constellation of moral excellences."

1 For centuries religious and political historians have disagreed on whether Midhat was murdered, and if so, by whom.
