Eternal beetle

Eternal beetle Ta-vanul (a.k.a. Beetle god or Guardian beetle)

Protector God of the Kakkle tribe

The Eternal beetle is a giant Rhino beetle with an opal-like exoskeleton. It lives in the swamp isles of Grolkeehee and has a particularly interesting relationship with the Kakkle goblins that live in the same swamps.   The eternal beetle, or beetle god, is currently the strongest entity that lives in the swamp. How old it is and where it came from is uncertain. Even its status as a god is up for debate both outside and inside of the Kakkle tribe.
The only thing that can be verified is that the beetle god has a symbiotic relationship with the goblins living in the swamps.   The Eternal beetle protects its territory fiercely from any invaders but it will also go out of its way to protect a Kakkle goblin that is getting attacked. In return, the Kakkle goblins bring it food and help protect its eggs and larva from pests.
An outsider would be nearly incapable of entering the swamps without a guide from the local tribe.

More information

  • The Beetle god's young are no larger than normal Rhinocerous beetles but they do have the same sparkling exoskeleton as their parent.
  • The Eternal beetle is vegetarian and mostly feeds on nectar and fruit. Melons are its favourite.
  • The goblins do not actually know if there is only one Eternal beetle. At least they've seen only one at a time.
  • Many goblin-generations ago (a.k.a. 40 years) there lived a hag in the swamp. At that time the swamp was split between the beetle and the hag.

Neat! There was one sentence that didn't quite make a lot of sense in comparison with the rest:

An outsider would be nearly incapable of entering the swamps without a guide from the local tribe.
It is not clear why would an outsider have an issue or what does it have to do with the beetle god.

AH, that remark is related to this sentence:
"The Eternal beetle protects its territory fiercely from any invaders but it will also go out of its way to protect a Kakkle goblin that is getting attacked."   The beetle is extremely territorial and will attack anything it sees as an invading threat but it also sees the goblins as trustworthy allies. In effect, the Eternal beetle will assume that something it would normally consider an invader isn't a threat if the goblins are amicable to it.
