Enchanted-Carbon Filtration

Enchanted-Carbon Filtration, or EC Filtration, is a technique for quickly cleaning a given liquid or gas of any and all contaminants. It works by taking the contaminated substance, and pumping it under high pressure through Enchanted-Carbon filters. The EC filters are enchanted with Transmutation magic in a specific way so that they "know" which substances to let through and which to filter out. This way one can filter saltwater into clean water, wine into water and condensed wine, or even filter air to gain pure oxygen.
Care has to be taken with removing the filtrate from the filters. This process is different depending on what the to-be-filtered substance is contaminated with. In the case of liquids, one needs a separate pipe from the filtering unit to remove the undesired fluids. In case of gasses, especially poisonous ones, the runoff pipe needs to be airtight. And if the contamination is solid it will get stuck in the filters, and they will need a good shaking-out once in a while.

Discovery

The process of EC Filtration was discovered by the Rorian Gnomes as a more efficient way than Solar Distillation of making fresh water out of salt water.
