Lachlan McDermott
Wealthy industrialist who raised himself up through a combination of business savvy and a willingness to get his hands dirty. Formed a gang who extorted the population of Histlegrad with price-inflated water. This eventually formed a moderately-successful business purifying ocean water for the populace. Over time, the business became more successful than the crime syndicate, but issues with efficiency and supply strangled both.
Lachlan eventually encounters Bistra, who is attempting to leverage their population of indentured faeries towards favors and power, but to little effect. The two talked at length, and eventually formed a mutually beneficial relationship in which the faeries would be used to bolster the water purification process, as well as expanding into Ice manufacturing, while Bistra would pose as Lachlan's personal attack dog as a means of giving the latter notoriety and intimidation while providing the former with a massive network of owed favors and the ability to gather information via their cover story as being 'just an animal'.
Lachlan is an egotist, believing that the world owes him success, power, and wealth, and he uses this to justify most of his darker deeds. He's not strictly a sociopath, but he's become quite proficient at distancing himself from those he and his associates hurt with their business dealings. Everything is done for the 'greater good', with 'good' in this case meaning 'wealth'. Born in poverty to sickly parent who died when he was young, Lachlan's view of the world was highly influenced by the con-men and grifters he grew up alongside. They made money practically doing nothing, and when Lachlan put effort into running many of the same schemes, it paid off tremendously. Blind to the pain his schemes caused, he began to look back at his parents with loathing, assuming them to have simply been lazy or weak. He has no pity for those still stuck in poverty, believing that the world is a cruel, ruthless place, and it must be met with similarly ruthless tactics.
In the deal he's struck with the Dragon Bistra, Lachlan's side of things is to be the face for their joint business, working on interpersonal matters where a dragon - at least of Bistra's size - wouldn't be taken seriously. Additionally, he handles the ledger of the large and twisted web of favors and debts the two have accrued over the years.
