Gold Coins

While rarely used by common folk, gold coins are the standard across the continent for many purchases such as weapons, horses, or passage by ship.  Minted by all of Tarien's larger states they are difficult to fake and universally accepted.  Most nation-states imprint their coins with visages of the current kings, but older coins stay in circulation for years after a head of state has changed.  In The Empire of Eldoria they are called crowns, as one side holds the imperial crown, while in Galencia they are called ounces, for at one point in time, they weighed a full ounce.  Such older coins, though often more valuable to collectors or by sheer weight are taken at base value with most merchants.
