Scope
The motivation behind building Tariel
Preserve the characters that my sister and I created in the early 2000s in a D&D setting for all to enjoy and visit.
The goal of the project
Creating the world for a future D&D campaign set in it. I want to be able to reference everything (doing my homework ahead of time).
Theme
Genre
Medieval/Fantasy - some cities have more tech/magic some are more rural
Reader Experience
I want the world to feel mystical, rustic and historical. I want my players to understand the deeper workings and motivations behind the characters by placing them in a setting where their actions can be rationalized.
Reader Tone
The tone is somewhere in between dark and bright. There are both adult themes and lighthearted topics explored here. The world is not difficult to live in, if you're a human, in Lunaire. Your mileage may vary depending if you choose to play a different race or cross the country's borders.
Recurring Themes
Racism, Classism, Good within evil, evil within good
Character Agency
The players do have the agency to alter the world's future. The only thing set in stone is its history.
Focus
Military Influence and the effects of the civil war
Government presence - layout and management of the land, government-mandated adventurer's guild, council meetings monthly.
Race relations - Humans everywhere, tensions between a few humans and other races left over from civil war
Economic strength and inequality of wealth distribution, even within a country, even within a city
Drama
Factions seeking another war
Villages mysteriously getting destroyed with no survivors
Deforestation tensions between the indigenous Lemarin people in the north of Lunaire and the industrial city of Fallbrook
Olympics-like gaming tourney cheating allegations as the event looms
