Polytheism and Saints

Most of the world is polytheistic and the deities that people believe in are many. Worshipers seldom dedicate themselves to a single god, instead being more pragmatic in their approach. A farmer may offer most of his tithe to a deity of agriculture, but if he's planning on a week long trip he'll be sure to offer up something to the patron saint of roads, and mumble a quick prayer to the god of luck while gambling. Priests, clerics, the blessed, and fanatics are the only people who dedicate themselves solely to one divine being, which offers its own pros and cons.   Local pantheons differ from region to region in size and nature, and occasionally deities will be shared across multiple pantheons. The deities of polytheistic religions tend to have many common themes regardless of their origins. Most deities have a narrow scope of one domain, grant powers to devout followers, and have the ability to manifest a physical avatar and walk among the people. A common belief is that most deities were once mortal and ascended to godhood through good deeds, strength of character, and perfecting an ideal. Because of this common ascension belief most deities are called "Saints" and are formally referred to as a Patron Saint of a domain.   The following are some of the more common polytheistic pantheons:
  • Orthodox Saints - Religious organization who follow the original Empire's pantheon.
  • Dwarven Ancestors - An old dwarven religion where they honor their dead.
  • Unitarians - Academic sect focused more on religious research and philosophy.
  • Tribal - Loose grouping of various tribes who worship saints.
The Unitarians believe that all of the different patron deities of all of the regions of the worlds are the same group of deities under different names. They call these deities "Saints," a term that has spread across the world.
