Overland Travel S02E03 Report

General Summary

The Marching Order

As the contingent headed for Mantol-Derith Alan Cardew began to organize the party. He sent the 3 scouts, 1 spy, and two thugs ahead of the main party. His instructions:
  • Personal safety first, do not engage.
  • Report back daily, at dusk.
Alan's assumption was that the spies would watch for ambushes and the scouts would watch for monsters.   The rest of the group was divided into three groups. Alan, Mr. Garrick, Bug, Richter, and Gunther would lead everyone. They were to travel in the middle with the squire.
Ezekiel Zadimus would lead the forward group with 2 other veterans, two guards, a spy, and 3 thugs.
The rear group, led by one of the veterans would contain an additional veteran, 3 guards, a spy, and 3 thugs.

The Zhentarim informed everyone that before heading underground, they would be traveling over land for 8 days.   The first day went without incident.
On day two, the party met a bard heading in the other direction. He was half dressed and looking over his shoulder. Upon questioning him, they learned that he was in a nearby city to make money through song. He began sining about the victory of the ruling king against an uprising - but found out most of the town sided with and fought for the uprising.

A small dungeon

On the third day, they spotted a large pile of apple cores on the side of the road. Gunther stopped and began snacking on them. While stopped, he and Mr. Garrick spotted a wooden door. Attempting to pick the lock, Bug found that the door was unlocked and entered to find a room with worn tapestries and rotten apples scattered about. Again, Gunther began eating the apples.   after a short discussion, the group began exploring, heading down a long hallway. Worried about what might lie ahead, Bug sends his familiar, unfortunately loosing contact with his owl after about 100 feet. When the party arrives at the spot, they find that the owl had triggered a blade trap.   The continued forward more cautiously and happened upon a door. Gunther swung open the door and was immediately attacked by 5 gargoyles. Striking and running, Gunther realizes that there is a large pile of silver in the room. As the party fights, Gunther maneuvers so that he can be the first in the room. As the battle winds down, he begins filling his pockets with the silver as quickly as he can - stashing all 2000 pieces before the party knows about his absence or the loot. As Richter and Mr. Garrick's minor elementals finish off some of the gargoyles, Gunther brings in wolves to finish off the remaining one.   During the battle, Alan sustained a minor injury. Gunther, new to the party, attempted to heal him and found that his magical healing further healed Alan. Perturbed, Alan forgives him, but lets him know that if he heals him again he will be bringing harm to Mr. Garrick.   Having a moment of privacy, Alan asks if he can crew someone out in front of the rest of the expeditionary force, reasoning that this will help them understand the chain of command.
Richter asks if he can smack him in return.   While Alan is talking to the group, Gunther decides that he will seek forgiveness by putting some of his silver into Alan's pockets. But he's not as adept at putting items into pockets as he is of removing them and gets caught. An argument ensues and Richter steps in. Examining the situation, Richter finds that there is silver in Alan's pockets that belong to Gunther and wants to know why Alan is stealing from Gunter.   Meanwhile Mr. Garrick searches the now empty room and discovers a sword. As they work through the rest of the dungeon, Garrick focuses on identifying the sword and finds out that it is a magical sword called "The Missing Sword."   After discovering what it does, he offers in to Alan letting him know that it will do extra force damage. Alan is content with his hex blade and declines as Bug steps in to ask if he can have it. Everyone agrees and Bug holds on to it in order to attune to it later that night.   The next morning everyone is awakened by Bug screaming in pain having taken some minor force damage from the sword. Bug tells everyone that the sword is magic, but it is cursed. Most of them have a good laugh, though Alan is irritated that Garrick identified the sword and gave it to Bug anyhow.   The rest of the 4th and 5th day go without incident.

Ambush

As the party passes though a wooded area, the tail end of the force is attacked - 3 fall unconscious immediately. As the three lie dying, the party begins looking for their attacker while the force sets up a perimeter. Within seconds, they find that there are 13 or so Grung who, while concealed, ambushed.   As they fight, a couple of the grung attempt to immobilize the party while another attempts to drag off one of the fallen. They party proves much to strong for the contingent of grung and they begin to retreat - in greatly reduced numbers. As the battle winds down, Fajita is stabilized while the other two fight to remain alive.
