Zar'rak Mesas (ZAR-rack)
The Zar'rak Mesas mark the natural border of the Ashara Desert, towering above the flat expanse of sand and stone on the opposite side of the Khasama River. These mesas are believed to have been sculpted over millennia by the ancient flow of the Khasama River, which once cut through the heart of the region, carving deep canyons and leaving behind the dramatic flat-topped formations seen today. Their steep cliffs and isolated plateaus create a stark and imposing barrier, separating the desert from the Sirocco Plains beyond.
The mesas' unique geography offers rare pockets of shelter and resources, with some valleys containing hidden springs or remnants of vegetation sustained by underground water sources. Legends speak of ancient civilizations that may have thrived here during a wetter age, leaving behind ruins and mysteries that draw adventurers and archaeologists alike. Though the Khasama River no longer flows through them, its history is etched into the very stone of the Zar'rak Mesas, making them a vital landmark and a testament to the region's transformative past.
