Session 5
General Summary
Session Summary: Velnir 18, 472 HE
Our heroes resumed their exploration of the haunted wreck of the Compass Rose, a ship whose tragic past seemed determined to claw its way into the present.Curiosity Killed the Door (and Nearly the Party)
Ioane, ever the experimentalist, poked the helm. Nothing happened. Disappointed but undeterred, the party split up to investigate the ship. Rainbow rummaged through a cabin, finding only rot and decay (and possibly a lifetime supply of bad smells). Zaruk went below deck, looting a pair of expensive candlestick holders and an elegant lute that would later prove to be incredibly out of tune. Dezzy, inspired by raw determination (and an apparent disregard for hinges), decided to deal with a locked door the old-fashioned way—by shapeshifting into a mule and obliterating it. Unfortunately, the door had been keeping in more zombies. Cue the screaming. Rainbow, sensing imminent danger, performed a tactical retreat, sealing herself in a nearby room while Zaruk, alerted by the commotion, sprinted to help. Once Rainbow rejoined the fray, the party battled the three undead sailors, once again proving that no matter how many times zombies get up, they will stay down when met with enough force. With the threat neutralized, Dezzy explored the room she had so heroically battered her way into, discovering a finely crafted ornate compass set. Meanwhile, Rainbow found a suspiciously raised floorboard and pried it up—earning a faceful of poison darts for her trouble. However, she did uncover a hidden stash of 200 gold—a fair trade for the pain. Satisfied with their plundering, Dezzy convinced the group to take a short rest before Rainbow investigated the last unopened door on the main deck.Treasure, Tragedy, and a Locked Journal
Descending once more to the lower decks, the party searched the cargo hold. Rainbow dug through crates while Ioane—always ready for a risky maneuver—tied a rope around herself and ventured into the dark pit where the captain’s chest lay waiting. Zaruk hauled her back up, and the chest was cracked open to reveal:- A pouch of gold and turquoise stones
- A wrapped packet containing an old journal
- A pair of boots
Negotiation (and Battle) With Feathered Fiends
Feeling a definite need to get off this cursed ship, the party made their way back to the upper deck—only to be greeted by a screeching harpy descending from above. Thinking quickly, the party attempted barter instead of battle. Rainbow generously offered up her mushroom painting, kobold wings, and the promise of fish in exchange for their lives. The harpy seemed intrigued but ultimately unimpressed. Ioane and Dez, determined to back up their promises, attempted to catch fish. They failed. Miserably. As if sensing their failure, another harpy arrived—and with that, negotiations ended, and violence ensued. Rainbow tried to outmaneuver the harpies by swimming under the ship to flank them, but their hypnotic song caught her in its spell, delaying her plan. Meanwhile, Ioane, Zaruk, and Dezzy fought fiercely, slaying both harpies in battle. After looting their remains, the party decided they’d had enough of this place and set off back to Dragon’s Rest. On their way out, Dezzy made a final check and uncovered a pouch with 50 gold pieces, a set of cartographer’s tools, and a dagger. The Curse and the Talisman’s Rest
Upon returning, the party spoke with Runara about the journal’s contents. She recalled the doomed husband mentioned within—Brastos—who had pledged himself to the dragon of Dragon’s Rest. His grave was located on the northern cliffs of the isle. Faced with the decision to burn the talisman or return it to Brastos’s grave, the party chose the latter. However, they forgot to ask Runara for the husband’s name, which led to a comedic moment of Runara yelling after them as they departed. Thankfully, Dezzy managed to catch the faint echo: Brastos. At the grave, Ioane dug a shallow hole to bury the talisman. Almost immediately, a thick fog gathered over the wreckage of the Compass Rose, unsettling Gurgi when he attempted to scout the area. Sensing that the burial might not be close enough to the remains of Brastos, Rainbow dug deeper and placed the talisman directly alongside the body, before refilling the grave. Satisfied that the curse was finally laid to rest, the party returned to the cloister.A Dragon’s Request
As the conversation continued, Runara revealed her true form, shifting into a bronze dragon before the party’s eyes. She spoke of Sharruth, the dragon whose devastation shaped these lands, and how three dragons had been required to stop her. The island itself was born from the fury of that battle. Another dragon—a blue dragon—came afterward, one that Runara was forced to fight. In response to the endless cycle of violence, she built Dragon’s Rest to be a sanctuary, a place of healing rather than destruction. Runara spoke of Aidron, a student who once sought her wisdom but ultimately rejected it. He had been drawn to the Clifftop Observatory, a place of mystery and power. Something there lures and ensnares, and Runara fears that Aidron is at risk of losing himself entirely. She asked the party for a favor—a moonstone prism key lies within the observatory. If they can retrieve it, they can enter and find Aidron before it is too late. If he could be saved, she wished for his return. If not… then they must do what they must.Next Steps
With another mystery unfolding before them, the party now sets their sights on the Clifftop Observatory. What awaits them there? Who—or what—calls out to Aidron? And is this mission one of salvation… or a prelude to a darker fate? Find out next time!Rewards Granted
