Hydra Deathroot

Written by CrazyJack

The Hydra Deathroot (Gurtil'Sol) is a type of flora that exists in the jungles and swamps of Mirkireth. It is uncommon, but relatively widespread in the region, and can be found quite easily due to its recognizable claw-like leaves.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Hydra Deathroot is usually small, around 2-5 feet long, but can grow up to 10 feet after some years. it consists of several (4-7) root-like vines extending from the ground, with 2-3 claw-like green leaves on each vine. The plants seeds are contained within the leaves.

Genetics and Reproduction

When the Hydra Deathroot reaches full maturity it releases it seeds, which are light enough to be carried by wind or water, the seeds inside the leaves are then deposited when the leaves eventually rot. The parent plant then withers and dies.

Growth Rate & Stages

The Hydra Deathroot usually takes around 4 years to reach full maturity, and is usually around 3-4 feet long, although some plants with plentiful nutrition can reach 10 feet in length.

Ecology and Habitats

The Hydra Deathroot usually grows by the edges of clearings, small bodies of water, and amongst tree roots. Here the plant uses its sensing fibers to detect movement, and uses its vines to catch and kill prey.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The Hydra Deathroot gets its name from its vines, which it uses to hunt. During the first year or so of its growth, the plant catches and feeds on small insects. When the plant gets slightly bigger, it hunts larger animals, usually catching passing lizards, rodents or fish. The larger Hydra Deathroots have also been known to feed on even larger animals, and even unfortunate travellers. The plants primary method for killing its prey is strangulation, nutrients in the flesh of the victim are then absorbed into the vines. Hydra Deathroots are also known for the strength of their grip, so once the plant has you in its grasp, it is difficult to escape without help.
