Solburst Flower Nurseries

The Solburst Flower Nurseries are a favorite among Talithans. The small yellow flowers brighten up the city, provide food, honey, and create a snow globe of sorts every year when air is blown into the nursery so their seeds can fly around and re-plant for next year. Some like watching the fat little bumblebees that live in the nurseries and pollinate the flowers.   Solburst flower nurseries are used to carefully raise Earth plants, previously known as Dandelions, in an enclosed environment. Since Solburst can quickly become an invasive species, they are not allowed to grow freely. The nurseries feed air in and out using very fine filters that can trap any errant seeds. When the plants start to seed, visitors are not allowed. Taking any part of the plant by visitors is strictly forbidden. For the most part, visitors are only allowed inside while the dandelions are in their yellow flower stage. Since not all dandelions develop at the same rate, these days are rare, when there are only yellow flowers and no white ones.   The Solburst nurseries are popular for visitors as places to walk by during the day. They are fully glass encased greenhouses, so it is easy to see the plants, even if one can not go inside. Bumblebees, which have been successfully added into the planet's biome, are brought in as pollinators. They give the Talithans a chance to see them up close. The Nurseries, along with many other aspects of Talithan life, are used to help promote the importance of Ecology. After all, the inhabitants of Earth almost killed off their pollinators.   Bumble bees are not the only outside pollinator brought into the nursery, but they are the most popular for visitors.   Every year when the plants go to seed a special event called a Seed Flurry takes places. It changes every year depending on the plants, so interested Talithan's can request alerts on their Identity Pads. Any surviving Bumble bees, and other flying pollinators, are removed beforehand. There is an announcement that the seeds are ready to fly. Then large blowers are turned on, allowing the seeds to fly around on their little white feathers. They are allowed to land as they please as the crowds watch. It is a short event, but some will stay and watch errant seeds float around until the last one has found it's place.   For the most part the seeds will grow where they land. Naturally, some of them will land in the walkways of the nursery. These are swept up after the event and used to fill in any gaps in the soil. Extras are dried and saved in case there is a slow year or illness. After the seed maintenance the people who care for the plants will take extra precautions to make sure none of the seeds escape the enclosure. They will also take extra time to patrol the soil in a large parameter around the Nursery to make sure none have escaped. Preservationists are also taught what to look for so they can also remove any errant Solbursts. The Talithan's have cultivated these plants since their arrival and so far they have safely contained them with only a few escapees here and there. The bright yellow flower tends to give them away, if they manage to survive in the wild for that long.   After the seeds have been planted and started to grow, the horticulturists will thin out any bunched plants. They are allowed to grow until they are a good size for human consumption, then thinned at that stage. The rest are allowed to grow until they fully flower. Once they reach a size where they would take over a significant amount of footage, they are once again removed. At this age they are only good for small animal food or as tea leaves, depending on where the demand is.
